Solved Does anyone actually LIKE Windows 7?

As I said Front Page will run in Win7. I just confirmed that with my friend.

You'd want to try installing Front Page in XP Compatibility Mode then if that doesn't work try Win2000 and as a last resort WIn98 mode.

Be sure to Run As Admin and if it doesn't work correctly fully uninstall before trying the next backward Compatibility Mode.

In my opinion, Windows 7 is the best OS Microsoft has ever made; better than XP. Windows 7 has very few problems that I have faced. The next version of Windows, Windows 8, I think will be a complete failure because Microsoft has tried to use Metro on the desktop, which just doesn't work... at all.

XP was a very good OS but had it's problems. I don't think I had one problem with Windows 7.

I personally don't understand how the libraries threw so many people off. I've used every O.S. Microsoft has sent out from 98 on and to me at least I had less trouble with 7 than any of them Yes, XP included. I use my machine(s) for my small business and have to keep track of many different things and find it much easier with 7 and its much maligned library system than any of the others. Take 10 minutes to set them up as you want and "Voila" there they are when you need them. (Tax rates/codes for several states,orders and invoices from multiple companies from several countries,fuel receipts and mileage figures, maintenance records for several different vehicles, insurance etc.) I'm also trying to write a book on the history of the American carnival business and enjoy researching the two world wars. I edit videos in my spare time. Could count on one hand how many times I've "lost" something. So I consider myself a "serious" user even if I do play two games on my machine when the mood strikes me. Granted I don't use programs that are 10 to 15 years old, I do try to keep current but 7 has served me extremely well with what I need it to do.

Exactly! Just completely ignore them. That's what I do. There are ways of making them disappear totally, but I just ignore them, that's all.

Scott, re-read Lady Fitzgerald's posts.

There are users out there that maybe, just may not be as proficient as you and I are with using computers.

Everyone has levels of proficiency that allow us to enjoy our daily routines.
Sometimes we excel and rise above those levels.
Sometimes we do not.

You may know more than I do about these machines and how they work, maybe I know more than you.

I wasn't trying to be condescending or trying to pass judgment OR criticize anyone. Was actually making a point about an earlier post that mentioned/said something to the effect of wanting the opinions of "serious users", as if anyone who liked 7 was an idiot. I fully understand that everyone has different levels of knowledge of ... well, everything. Thats the reason we're here isn't it? To help when and where we can. If anyone mistook me I deeply apologize as I didn't mean anything bad.

Then we're such scrupulous helpers that we guilt-trip each other for not playing along trying to help someone who only wants to vent.

They get a kick out of the naive Boy/Girl Scouts tripping over each other trying to help them cross from the past, faulting each other for not laying down their jacket in the mud often spread by the OP.

You'll notice I only respond to the post by other members. Could care less about the OP at this point. I gave him two links that if he spent any real time on he'd have a full understanding of windows 7 in a week or two. He obviously ignored them because of the direction he took things afterwards.

I'll still chat up the in's and out's of windows with my sevenforum buddies anytime any thread though.

And maybe even vent some ourselves? We're the ones who have to deal with them, after all. So these become ready-made vent threads.

I ignored Libraries successfully for over a year, maybe two. Then we started getting unexpected consequences from moving User shell folders to another drive since these are System files, messing with images and permissions. For example, I couldn't fix permission failures on installers attempted to be run from a moved Downloads folder.

So we defaulted to advising to merely copy User folders to the data drive, rightclick on each to add to Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums, which is only slightly clumsy and puts C and D all in one view so you can easily move any transgressors into C over to D. This gained popularity with the rise of smaller SSD's used for OS/Programs only, especially when their prices were still high.

So suddenly we deal with Libraries every day here, at least in my specialities.

Yeah, I only speak to my specific circumstances. There are network and other situations where I could see them being helpful (many of my clients still use xp / vista so it hasn't really come up yet)
For me on my home computer I haven't found the need I have a 128 gig ssd and I'm only using about a quarter of it.

I personally think people baby ssd's too much. They are not nearly as fragile as a lot of people seem to think.

Personally, I think if the title of this thread hadn't thrown everyone on the defensive, this would just be a stubborn OP fighting change until someone here enlightened them.

It almost always takes a lot more patience, but there are plenty of instances of a positive outcome, I've seen that patience in a lot of the senior members, even the defiant ones in this thread.

I guess I'm just a naive boyscout, but if the OP is actually just a troll or a 7 hater baiting us, I would think the admin would just get rid of them and let the forum get back to what we do best.

I have no doubt this OP is less than ideal, how many are ideal? I myself came here with almost no knowledge of computers, so I don't quite fit in the veteran category that a lot here do.

I still remember moving up in rank and finally being able to actually return some of the knowledge I learned here, maybe even solving the problem, again I'm just that naive boyscout I guess.

Like I said before, I think it started with a poor choice for a thread title...carry on.

That's pretty much the boat I'm in. I understand them but, the way I have my folders set up (transferred over from XP), reorganizing them to be able to take advantage of libraries would be more work than it would be worth for the very little gain I would receive. Notice I said, "I would receive". Some, possibly many, could benefit greatly from libraries while others would benefit even less than me. I could have just ignored them but chose instead to simply the default libraries in the Start Menu (ie, limit them to one folder each) to better suit my needs.

Everyone has different needs. The same applies for other new features of Win7. I depend heavily on AeroSnap; heck, I was using a third party application that gave me the feature in XP. I'm sure there are others that will have no use for it.

Agreed, VLC is superior to all windows media players

...and VLC is superior to all windows media players because it doesn't rely on codecs it also has vastly more adjustments and features if you bother to look for them. Also it will play the new 10 bit format which media player seems to hate.

OMG, I hate codecs!

In W7 I use:

• Winamp for music
• Media Player Classic - Home Cinema for videos
• VLC for videos (for videos that MPC-HC doesn't like)

In XP I use:

• WMP 10 for music
• Media Player Classic - Home Cinema for videos
• VLC for videos (for videos that MPC-HC doesn't like)

Except for programs that insist on:

• Going to the Libraries instead of a "real" location.
• Loading everything in the Libraries into their databases (e.g. WLE-PG, WMP 12)

That's a telling comment - "so many people"! I thought Windows 7 was supposed to be popular and so, by inference, people would be happy to use it and not have problems.

Not that I started the thread to get Windows 7 help, it was just that when I mentioned 7 to other computer buffs I got the same comment - that they didn't like, or were having trouble with, Windows 7. So I thought I would ask the question (used in the heading of the thread). I wondered how many would agree with me. Now I wonder how many people who are not keen on Windows 7 were put off joining the thread by at-times hostile replies.

By the way, I don't consider my heading as being provocative. As a retired journalist I would term it eye-catching, inviting people to read it and not pass on to the next thread.

As for the troll insults: My dictionary says: "In internet discussion forums a troll is someone who deliberately tries to provoke a heated argument." Again, not true in my case.

An entry on Wikipedia says: "a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an on-line community . . . with the preliminary intent of provoking readers into an emotional reponse. Mass media has used troll to describe 'a person who defaces internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families'." Neither of those apply, either.

ADDED: What actually made me think of posting on this forum was the effusive launch of Windows 8 by the now former CEO of Microsoft (as you would expect). I just thought I would seek the opinion of Windows 7 users. I couldn't use the Windows 8 forum as, surprise surprise, I haven't upgraded to Windows 8 and so that wouldn't be an appropriate use of the forum

Well, all "computer buffs" I'm acquainted with love w7. If someone doesn't like it, I don't really care, XP is still a viable alternative, or a Mac machine. :huh:

Yes it took me a few days to get used to it, but when I did, w7 is a keeper and winner in my book at least.

For libraries I point each one to one folder, Pictures to My Pictures, etc. I use the Start menu to navigate to Pictures, Documents, Videos, and Music. Libraries put "so many" off because it's something new, I just see no need to use them but I can see they could be useful if one has similar folders scattered about, say, on a network drive.
