I can't connect to internet by using the VMWare Player.

My host system is 64-bit Windows 7 RTM. And I installed the vmware player 2.5.2. The virtual system is the 32-bit Windows 7 RTM. But the virtual system can't connect to internet, the connect type is "NAT". I also try to use the other two mode, it also can't connect to internet. Does anybody know the reason? Thanks.

Still running the 64bit RC and having the 32bit RC on both the Virtual PC and on the SUN Virtual Box as well both connect by way seeing that the network option at the end of the installation is set for home network not work place or public. You will have to go into the Control Panel>Network + SHaring and try setting it up without any items listed in the IE options>connections under dialup there as well.

The internet connection here with an ethernet connection once set to the home network option is instantaneous with the Windows update option going to work. The network troubleshooter is one method while in the CP to have that possibly offer a fix to the problem as well.

Depending on the type of connection once the Windows installer is just about finished before initializing the desktop you are asked for the type of network setting. For home users the "home network" option is selected there.

If the network adapter isn't listed in the device manager upon reaching the desktop usually in the case of a usb type then you will need to install the drivers for a new hardware or look for a yellow marked item under "other devices" in the DM. The story is a bit different on any VM however as far as usb adapters since you can't simply install device drivers as you would on a normal installation to the drive.

I still can't understand. I used "home network" before initializing the desktop. And I used "NAT" mode when I created the image by VMWare workstation.
You mean I should use the other connection mode when I create the image?

before you go any further, have you installed the VMware tools on the virtual machine? If not, try that first.

What type of connection do you have there? dsl? cable? dial-up? even onboard Lan or a nic card? That could be useful here for offering help.

Unfortunately -- and VMWARE is still working on it -- NAT doesn't work in Windows 7.

Change to "Bridged" and you'll be fine.

The next upgrade to vmware player and workstation should have this fixed.

I posted the VMWARE reply some time back but it should also be on the vmware site as well -- search on user jimbo45 on the vmware workstation forum.

If you don't have vmware workstation you can still edit the virtual machine settings either manually or by using QEMU -- just google on "Create virtuial machine with vmware player".

• I've downloaded the drivers for the nic and installed them in the virtual Win7 installation.
• I have installed the vmware tools.
• I've tried all the network configuration settings in vmware player (NAT, Bridge, etc) , but cannot connect to the Internet.
• The virtual Win7 says that it cannot find a driver for the nic, even after installing the driver provided by Dell.

Any thoughts?

#1). Virtual machines use virtualized hardware....therefore you don't want to go to Dell and download a driver for their NIC and install that within your virtual machine as it's not seeing the Dell hardware...but rather a virtualized NIC.

If I were you, I would uninstall the VMWare Tools. Then uninstall any NIC drives that you have installed under the Windows 7 VM. Then, go into the settings of the VM (from within VMWare Player menu) and remove the NIC. Boot the machine so that it has NO NIC. Then, power off the VM. Add the NIC back to the VM hardware (within the VMWare Player menu), set it to BRIDGED then boot up. It should detect new hardware and install drivers for it. Then try and see if you have
access. If not, install the VMWare Tools.
