Memory Usage On C: (Where is it coming from?)

Hello, so I just checked my C: Drive for usage and it says that I am using 351 GB. I have 331 GB left, but I am curious as to where the usage of that amount of hard drive space is coming from. I hardly have any programs because of the clean reinstall and the current program sizes are no where near that capacity. The videos and pictures I transferred over combined it about 50 GB. Where is the rest of my diskspace? Any ideas? I would like to clean my hard drive as much as possible.

Restore points are also limited to using 10 GB as max.

I appreciate any advice or tips!

PS. I have run CCleaner and Puran Defrag at least twice.

Post a shot of disk management with everything expanded.

Did you format the drive when you did the install ?

I did not perform a format. I thought of that just before posting but thought it wouldn't have been necessary....

I'm assuming this is the picture you want?

You may have carried a bunch of stuff over from your last OS. You`ll just have to start exploring your drive to find out what`s there. If you`re not too far into it maybe you`ll want to reinstall.

Windows should only take up about 15 GBs, plus what you added, and a hyberfile that you can get rid of if you don`t use hybernation.

It created a file called 'Windows.old' and it has some gigs inside, but I don't see anything substantial so far. The laptop is supposed to be able to hold up to 1TB of information and with the previous install, I doubt I ever passed 200 GB. I was just hoping someone else might have had this experience and knew what happened..

I am trying to avoid doing another reinstall since I just finished adding everything and adjusting the setting as well ^.^

If you don`t need anything in the windows old file you can delete it.

Are you sure you did a CLEAN INSTALL ? As this would have wiped out everything on the partition and you would have not wound up with a windows.old folder.

By the way, I only see about 700 GBs there, not a terabyte. Which is actually only 931 GBs.

You need to format the install partition during an install to wipe it clean, but only the install partition.

Unless you want to wipe the entire drive ( delete all the partitions ) but that`s a whole nuther kettle of fish :sarc:

I know >.> that's something I've been trying to figure out myself...at least I think I ordered it with 1TB.. I might've taken a few less to save on some cash when I ordered it. That's something I can look up later though. I'm more concerned about where this usage is coming from.

To find what is on the drive . I suggest WinDirStat . It will show you everything on the drive . It lists the folders from large to small . You can see all the subfolders and files by expanding each listing .
WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics
Download and install it . When run click ok in the drive selection box . When done it will show a graphical view of the drive and an expandable list view . You can delete the data you want gone by using the clean up function which is manuel or delete by right clicking on the items in the list .
You can also open the files by double clicking them or right clicking them in the list .

IMHO a realy nice and needed program .

Please be carefull when deleting things .

Oh and you have a 750gb drive . The 3 I have add up to approx 698gb aswell .

You probably have a bunch of restore points> Run this command:

vssadmin list shadowstorage

Look under Allocated

Btw: there is no 'memory' on C - it is disk space. Memory is RAM.

Tried that. It opens the command prompt for a second and then disappears.

I did find what was eating up my storage though.

Note to users: When you do a reinstall of windows, the computer will store a copy of your drive called 'Windows.old'. This file will only appear to take up a fraction of storage that it really does. (Mine was ~40GB for example) In reality, I'm assuming there were hidden folder or something that caused it to reserve space on the hard drive for it. After deleting the file I was able to get back ~150 GB of storage. Just a friendly tip ^.^

(I guess using 136 GB is reasonable...however after a reinstall I might scour for hidden files holding lots of bytes.)

To the 'memory' thing, I have been told ROM was memory and I thought ROM made up your hard drive. So I associated that with memory...if it's not memory what is it? O.o
