Solved No Wired Internet Access - SHOULD be an Easy Fix

Dell Inspiron 570 - 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

• Wired Auto Config is running.
• LAN settings are to automatically detect settings
• Ipconfig displays a valid IP address.
• Have run netsh winsock reset.
• Have unplugged and reconnected the modem.
• Have contacted the ISP and had them check the modem connection from their end.
• Have tried with clean boot and safe mode with networking.
• Have gone into Device Mgr and uninstalled the network driver and watched it reinstall on reboot.
• Network card area on the back of the tower is lit.

Yet on a boot I always get the little yellow triangle over the WLAN icon in the notications area. No internet access. When I've right clicked on the icon and selected repair, the troubleshooter says that it could not determine the problem.

Most tellingly, when I attempted an ipconfig /release it would not release.

But either I don't know what to do next, or I'm having a senior moment (wait didn't I already say that?)

It's my mother-in-law's PC and I didn't completely pull out the tower from its area under the desk. Just far enough to determine the existence of light, but not far enough to determine color.

No, didn't try the renew since the release didn't work.

Good Ethernet cable ?

Certainly seemed to be a good cable, but I'll be going back on Monday, and I'll check the lights, try a renew and take along another cable.

A /release should always work in your situation. You do need an elevates command prompt though. (Run as administrator)

As I indicated, the PC is not on site and I'll be going there tomorrow. Will collect screenshots and report back. Unfortunately my mother in law doesn't want me to take the PC - she's somewhat addicted to the games she's installed on her computer.

Also I remember checking that the 2 browsers (ie8 & Firefox) were not using proxy servers

Without seeing the ipconfig output I can only give you little advice.

Check for updated drivers from the manufactures website.

Could not get to the PC for the lasr few days, so the info I provided was given by my mother in law over the phone. She could not possibly run an ipconfig /all, take a screenshot and email it to me - thta would be beyond her capabilities. I will be there in about 5 hours.

Everything looks okay. Have you tried rebooting the modem?

This is currently occurring not only at my mother-in-laws, but also at my house, using the exact same wired modem connection I'm using on this PC. And obviously a different cable, even a different ISP.

Secondly, when I right click on the network icon in the notification area, and select repair, I eiher get that 'troubleshooting could not identify the problem', or 'Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)'.

And third.... there is only a yellow light lit on the ethernet port on the back of the tower. No green.

I have also reset TCP/IP stack with
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

It had no effect.

Whew....Now when I run a repair on the network connection, I get Security or firewall settings might be blocking the connection

Lighting is different for different NIC's i wouldnt worry about that since your getting an IP address.

My #1 suggestion to you is to get a router to help protect your PC from the internet.

What location is your network set to? (public or private).

Just to test. turn your windows firewall off and see if you can connect.

Even it if allows you to connect turn the firewall back on.

If there is only a yellow light and no green that usually means the onboard has been overloaded and is out of service, clearing the cmos on the board has been known to fix this problem. Just be sure and write down any important settings from the bios so you can return them to how they were.

Chev I have boards that blink only orange. And for that type of nic it means 1Gb connection.

Not saying your not correct because it sounds like a good theory.

Could this be caused by a DoS on the WAN ip since they're not using a router?

Well the one on my board shows both green and orange but if the onboard is out the green one is off. I guess it depends on what the lights were before the problem occurred. At the back of my board where the Ethernet plugs in I get orange with blinking green when it does something.

I've fixed onboard Ethernet connections by just clearing the cmos on many occasion and I don't see anything else that might be causing this problem.

Because the problem occurs with two different modem's it would appear to be something wrong with the machine. I would also be curious to see if this machine can pass the sfc/scannow test.

This PC seems to be all over the place with its symptoms and error msgs.
Today I have both lights working on the ethernet port - 1 flashing amber and 1 solid green

We seem to be on a different page.... I cannot connect to the internet with a wired connection, and you're asking me to get a router? I must be missing something - millions upon millions of people have a single computer that they have connected with an ethernet cable to a modem which is connected to a phone jack or to a cable outlet. They have no router and should have no need for one unless they buy a laptop or move the tower into another room.

At any rate, the problematic PC has now been on site at my home for 2 days. It is attached to a 2-wire modem / router.

The windows firewall has been turned off for the last 24 hours.

I would also be curious to see if this machine can pass the sfc/scannow test.

sfc /scannow did not find any integrity violations when I ran it yesterday. Since things seem to be in a constant state of flux I'm rerunning it now.

The latest ipconfig says you are online so maybe the network stack is hosed completely hard to say. Try saving the file below, unzip and run the file until the machine reboots.
