need new motherboard socket 775/DDR2

Hi,

I need to replace an Asus P5LP-LE motherboard with a new one... My pc specs are:

Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 65nm
3GB DDR2 Dual Channel @667MHz
HD 4870 X2
600W PSU
300GB Hard Disk

I need a new motherboard with:

- Core 2 Duo/Quad/Extreme support
- DDR2 Dual Channel Support
- a PCI-E port for my GPU
- decent overclocking features

Who can give me some suggestions? I'm not going to spend a lot of money on it, so a mid-end motherboard should be ok for me..
And no, I'm not going to replace all my pc... I only need a new motherboard with these features..

With your list of requirements, you get Hobson's choice (no choice at all):

Newegg.com - ASRock G31M-GS R2.0 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

You'd get more choices if you were willing to go to DDR3. (At Newegg, 2X2 GB of DDR3 1333 is available for less than $20US.)

I hope that an industry standard motherboard will fit in that HP. (I have no reason to believe that there will be a problem. I just have an abiding suspicion of appliance PCs.)

Thank you, this motherboard seems to be a good one for me... But it has got only 2 slots for ram, so I'm limited to 2GB DDR2, which are not really the top...

So, if I go to DDR3, what motherboard do you suggest me?

Is DDR3 1333 a lot slower than DDR3 1600?

DDR2 and DDR3 are not interchangeable, normally. It is very rare where a motherboard can do both. If your motherboard has a DDR2 standard, then it cannot be changed to DDR3. The socket 775 boards are old enough to be very hard to find. You may like to consider a new build with a newer chipset.

A quick look at Newegg doesn't show a single LGA775 board with 4 RAM slots.

They have this odd board, though:

It isn't really a 4 slot board; you can use 2 DDR2 DIMMs or two DDR3, but not both at the same time.

Socket 775 boards seem to be getting scarce, if purchased new.

I'd probably consider an AMD FX-4100 and an AM3+ board if trying to build a new budget system, but just those together would be not much less than $200US. I presume that you are looking for more like a $50 upgrade.

This is my LAN game pc, and since I have a decent GPU on it, I'm only looking to change motherboard to push my CPU over 3,0 GHz in overclock (yes, it can handle it on air) or to put in a quad-core CPU later... But I'm not going to replace all the system...

Offers you a 20% OC, has 2 PCI-e slots, ATX format, 775 (supports quad core processors), 4 DDR2 800 slots... pretty good
Not sure for the price,or is it even "buy-able" anymore... But if you find it, i think it will be good for your needs.
As for the DDR2 and DDR3, i strongly suggest you to buy DDR3 board because it is much more cheaper, and you have faster modules - 1600mhz; 1333... In my shops, for an average quality brand, 2 Gb DDR2 @ 1066 cost the same as 4 Gb DDR3 @ 1333.

In real world situations you will not be able to notice the difference at all. Only in benchmark programs will it show. In some cases you can overclock the ram to run at the faster speed. In most cases the price is not that much different at all. DDR2 ram is silly expensive. You can sometimes buy a new motherboard and some DDR 3 RAM (enough to get you going) slap the same CPU and heatsink in for less than 4 GB of DDR2 ram.

Yep I reckon Indiana is right personally I would slip in a 1155 board a nice little i3 and 8GB 1600 RAM - you wouldn't necessarily need the 1600 but it's handy. my Sandy is running 16GB 1600MHz RAM but it is throttled back anyhow to 1333.

The motherboard would be around (out here) $90 the CPU $135 and the RAM well 8GB G Skill 1600 $45 so for about $270 practically a new machine and some leeway. In the US more like $250 - $240.

My Ivy I just posted in rigs is running 1866 and truly it isn't much faster than 1333 until I start O/C the it might come in handy.

on Ebay you can find tons of socket 775 mobos for less than 50 euro. last time there were more than 2000 results for EU.

Since you can't simply walk up to a store and buy what we recommend, it's better to have a look at what is available in your price range, and choose the best of that (just google the name of the mobo with "REVIEW" after it to see if the overclocking features).

correct... I already have a main pc, I use this secondary pc and a third Pentium 4/AGP based system to LAN play...
