Leaked: newer Office 2010 Technical Preview build

@john3347,

Thanks for that it's always a good thing to have paper, (offline), copies of this type of thing

Also

With regards to the UBitmenu add-on I have managed to check things out a little bit more.

It installs as a document template in the user start-up folder, so I would assume it can be setup to show or not depending on user,
it adds an extra "Menu" tab to the ribbon which seems to cover the missing 2003 menu structure.

It is controllable from the addons area from the office options button so may be switched on and off as required.

It comes with an uninstaller but to remove it's simly a matter of deleting the dotx template file

After the initial visit, we will check-in with you weekly to bi-weekly during the 1-2 month time period for 30 minutes to 1 hour either by phone or video-conference to listen to your feedback from using Office 2010 Technical Preview, e.g., what you like and dislike.

Benefits of participating

Help you in the upgrade process to Office 2010.
Provide feedback directly to Microsoft about our products that will be used to improve them.
Receive demos and training materials about new features in Office 2010.
We'll compensate you with a software gratuity (up to $599.00 USD retail value).

Interesting Offer,

I think it's a US only based offer at the moment I just checked my connect account and the are no additional surveys available - just a link to my completed form when I was accepted - could of course be because I'm in the program that I don't see it

Finding Items on the Technical Ribbon

Hi Guys,

I still am having a hard time finding stuff on the ribbons. Office 2000 was the last one I used and I had all the things I used most right in front of me all the time. I can see why they have all the stuff in there for people to use, but I want to organize it my way. 2007 has a bar for that, but it is small and limited. I've stopped using Word for letters and am now using Corel Draw (Wordperfect is embedded) for letters. I'll switch back if I can arrange things as I want.

Gary

Gary - I have been previewing Office 2010 for about two weeks. After I used the Technical ribbon 3 or 4 Times I couldn't readily find items either.... even though using it causes me to remember where things are. For example in Office 2003 Insert-Page Break or Section Break was a menu item. In 2010 when a person goes to view/Page Break section Break isn't there, but if the user right clicks on that tab a menu - pops up and section break is an option. God's Speed - Patrick C

This ribbon aversion is baffling, especially because you're not at its total mercy any more. You can hide it or customize it. If you want Page Break - or any other command - you can make your own ribbon tabs, choose your own name for a tab, make your own groups, and put any command you want in the order you want.

This solves nothing. I don't want the ribbon, I want the original Menu bar.

The ribbon is stupid, and makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER to me (for instance, word count was in tools, now it is in review? wth?). I want my file, menu, edit, tools, etc. back.

Why can't you put Word Count in your own tab? You can have your file, menu, edit, tools, etc. back - Just make the tabs and uncheck all the crap you dislike. You don't need to keep what MS dishes out. To me, it's been beyond aggravating to not be able to customize Word's menu like this for the past 15 years. (Interesting that you mentioned Word Count because, for me, that was always in a horrible place.)

Not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers, but for the first time you can put Word Count where you want, and I can put it where I want - plus the other 15 billion or however many commands are in there.

This is an incredible change.

I totally agree that the changes to the ribbon available in office 2010 do improve matters no end. I have been customizing office toolbars for many years and thought it a retrograde step in office 2007 not to have this functionality.

For those who are still with office 2007 I wouls again reccomend the UbitMenu add-on I suggested before UBit Schweiz: UBitMenu (languages) as it provides a good compromise

I'll be glad when I can give 2010 a try. It's not the ribbons themselves that I dislike, it just that I would like to put stuff where I expect it to be. Yes, I'm starting to learn where stuff is at, but it is still so much slower than having one or two toolbars. No clicking from one toolbar to the next they're just there. If I can have a couple ribbons that have all of my most used buttons on, that will be fine with me, although it is still an extra click to get to half my stuff.

I actually like the new ribbon. It looks much more innovative and is more aesthetically pleasing. Plus, I actually ended up being able to find stuff here better than in past versions with the menu bar.

Also, you have to remember that Microsoft Office has a very high market share (probably the highest in the world), meaning that even though you might know where things are, other people won't because the majority of the population aren't tech-savvy. Because of this, many people don't know where everything is in Microsoft Office. This was why Microsoft changed the user interface, to make things easier for the less tech-savvy people, so while you might think this change hinders you, the majority of the population will most likely like this change.

This is also kind of why Microsoft refuses to put a Windows equivalent of Mac's Spaces into Windows. While the tech-savvy people may like it, it may greatly confuse those who aren't tech-savvy.

I believe this is the "Mondo" version, whatever that means.

I don't want it in my own tab, I want it where I expect it to be: In the tools drop down menu. Which no longer exists.

The real reason this pisses me off so much is that not only did MS change it to a (counter intuitive IMO) new interface, there is NO OPTION TO GO BACK! That's right. They JUST AS EASILY could have an option to "Turn on Classic Menu" or something. Why not? I would use it, and I am sure many others would too!

So I guess I cannot truly complain about this until I try customizing the Ribbon. But I will, because I see no good reason why that classic menu could not be included as well.
At some point, I will mess with the ribbon, and try to make it into something that makes sense. But you have to remember that I can be pretty damn lazy, so it probably will take a back seat to things like homework and sleep.

I hate the Classic Menu Bar. Ribbon is by far the best innovation by Microsoft for a long long time. It makes everything so much easier. The ribbon is here to stay.

AutoCAD has already adopted the ribbon. I would love to see the ribbon in Photoshop, because at the moment the Photoshop UI is a complete mess.

I like office 2010, but I want that old bar back. Thats all.
If there is no way to do that, then I will switch back to 2003. The problem is that there are compatibility issues with them.

i believe the best you can do is get the 2007 ribbon (search for in Rivera's page of within windows...:))
and you can also get a file, edit menus to a point using (barman i believe said) Ubitmenu (UBit Schweiz: UBitMenu (languages))
