Is there any UBCD4Win for Windows 7 to start system restore?

Is there any Windows 7 external boot tools available to access PC files and start system restore of Windows 7 machine? On XP days there was a UBCD4Win, which once started offered many system tools among them system restore tool. But I believe it's not compatible and capable to fix Win 7 registry.

Intel mobo based Fujitsu desktop PC Esprimo 510 E85+ is not capable to start neither in safe mode or safe mode command prompt. I have tested there is no memory nor HDD errors.

PC system doesn't have much of data to backup but rather unique application, which isn't easy to reinstall.

If you have a 64-bit retail Windows 7 installation disc, then you could use that to boot to the System Recovery Options screen to do a system restore from.

If not, then you could create a System Repair Disc on any 64-bit Windows 7 computer to use on your 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise to do the same.

Do these boot CDs support target PC system restoring as normally Windows repairs active system, which isn't faulty PC, when booted from CD?

It can be used on any windows 7 pc. You would use a 32 bit cd on a 32 bit install and a 64 bit on a 64 bit pc etc.

Hi, this thread is one of the few relevant results returned when searching "boot tools - is UBCD4WIN 'compatible' with Win7Ultimaate 64-bit"

All I want to do is defrag outside the OS. Why?

My OS is installed in a VHD. Some defrags say it's heavily fragmented, so I'd like to defrag the disk that the VHD resides on. To do this, I've read (and it makes sense) I should NOT load/mount/use the VHD residing on the disk, whilst defragging.

I only have one OS installed. Annoyingly, I didn't leave space on the disk for a defrag (17% ?) so I'll have to shrink the VHD first.

I've read (and have been trying to get) defraggler to run. Finally installed the UBCD4Win (had a bigger ISO, but wasn't sure what files to copy to the boot USB disk I've made, using diskpart and bootsect, details here) do I now copy the (burnt) ISO contents to the 'bootsectored' USB? AND Will this work?! (Is it safe?!)

It offers a boot time defrag which is valuable since it gets at system files which can't be defragged when they're running. This can greatly affect boot times and is a much deeper defrag.

You can include a full disk check to give you even more bang for a freebie.

I enable Intellgent Optimizer on the Addtl Operations tab to move most-used files to the outer edge of disk for faster reads. It is truly ingenious and has no documented history of failure.

Thanks, this sounds like an(other) amazing defraggler, but does it run from a CD?

I'm running smart defrag, which I prefer to auslogics ,I think both offer boot options, but they are 'boot-time' windows applications, no?

To be crystal, I'm after a defragger which I can call from outside the OS, as the OS will be packed away in it's little 'box' (vhd file on D, ready for shrinking after purging >100gb of media)


Will be checking this out as a replacement for the OS defrag though, sounds great.

It's boot time defrag is run from RAM after a reboot. No different from disk.

Thanks for the info. I'll give this a try. I see that exclusions are permitted and that's very useful indeed!

Currently I'm using Ultra Defrag - it allows modification of the boot time script to exclude files, folders or drives but so far I've never figured out a way to move system files to the faster parts of the disk.

It looks like Puran Defrag will do what I need it to do!

This makes me think it WON'T work

The OS, from which the app will be called following a reboot, will not be loaded (the VHD will be unmounted, on the disk that is being defragged).

This is a native (bare metal) VHD, and I believe it's imperative that the VHD is not loaded whilst the disk is being defragged (in fact, the disk cannot be defragged whilst the VHD is in use).

If it could run from a 'pure CMD prompt' (no DLLs, executable stored on another, non-system partition) it shouldn't be a problem, hence the search for 'boot tools' containing decent defraggers..

Will try and report on defraggler from UBCD as soon as poss. thanks again!
