My old PC setup, is it going to retire now?

Hello folks

I built this computer back in 2010 I nearly spent around 3000$. (I live in Norway)
Basically my setup is following;

Intel iIntel Core i7-920 2.66GHz
MSI Geforce GTX 560Ti 1GB
Kingston DDR3 1033MHz 8GB(2x2x2x2)
OCZ Agility 3 120 GB SSD
Hitachi 2x500 GB HDD
Cooler Master 600W Silent Pro
Cooler Master Miditower 922 HAF

I can barely play Battlefield 3 in low settings 1680x1050 with 60frames stable. Not even talking about high end games. Any advice you guys can give me?

Hiyya Jack mate might be worth running a memtest just to see if it up to scratch. Takes a while and you need at least 8 passes for any result.

http://www.memtest.org/ > make the bootable disk set the BIOS to boot from optical and let it run - overnight is good.

Just as an afterthought maybe just reseating the cards and sticks would worth a try too, and I think maybe lok at the drivers for everything plus upgrade the RAM?.

You need a better GPU card with more VRAM in it, it would help. If you board takes i5 I would go with on of those. Of course a whole new build would be the best thing.
Oh, just checked that CPU is an aging LGA1366.

Good spot Gary I hadn't realised and yes Jack a new i5 set up would be good - Asus pick of the boards for me right now but as always it is budget eh?.

Having said that on the bright side I suppose you still have the case PSU and RAM sticks.

Yes you are right it is LGA1366 stock core.

So I should upgrade my core to those new ones out there and better GPU?
I see lots of people out there running medium to high graphics on games with their 560Ti's how do they do it?

Well Jack I run a Ge Force GTX 650 in my Ivy Bridge and although I don't play a lot of high end games some of th Youtube footage of say Aces High comes through very well but Britton is the one to ask mate he is the wizz!

Have a look at our system specs by clicking on them at the bottom of out posts and you will egt some idea of a (in my case) a reasonably decent set up.

As for RAM I will PM you ok?

Yes, I would go for a new Z77 motherboard and at least a i5-3570K CPU, Ivy Bridge. A GPU with 1GB of GDDR5 memory will help a lot. nVidia I think is better because they can do the job with a lot less power use and heat.

Which 560Ti do you have (384 or 448 stream processors)? With the 1GB you have listed in your original post, I am assuming you have the 384 SP version. Either way, it is still a decent card. I would upgrade your motherboard/CPU first and try it with the 560Ti before upgrading your graphics card. Just my 2 cents...

If not already, overclock it to at least 3.6ghz

(Replace stock cooler and paste)

Replace.

Single cards 660ti, 670 or 680. (670 is sweet spot) or a 7970.

For even better performance, SLI or CF.

Cooler Master 600W Silent Pro

Replace/upgrade depending on new card/s choice.

The rest of what you listed is fine. Depending on your board, your ram 'May' be an OC limiter.


Basically there's plenty of life left in the old dog. The 920 is still a strong chip (when Oced)

Budget wise, it'd be cheaper to replace card and PSU.


A whole new Z77 build, whilst nice, is not imperative.

On the plus side, if you buy new cards + PSU and still find performance wanting - you can still transfer those to a new board/CPU if you desire. They would not be wasted.






But if you have the budget and feel the 'urge' - build a whole new Z77 rig then by all means

Yep as smartyeyeball has said if you feel the need for new set up my current Ivy Bridge is running very nicely but in hindsight I would have gone for a more featured board - not that I doa lot of gaming but I am impressed with the Asus the i5 3750K and the G Skill RAM I have in place. Plus that new BIOS stuff is really good once yo get used to it.


my rig cost around $1200 but that is out here where we pay premium prices compared to the US You could leave out the HAF case if yours is good enough and I only got the large PSU cos it was on a $100 off offer.
