The Solution

Don't use IE, duh, it sucks.
Use Google Chrome 24 beta, it's the fastest there is.

Is it really necessary as I have already run malware bytes and found nothing

Try using a different internet browser.

Just for peace of mind, if it was my machine, I'd run Eset along with MBam.
