Direct X 11.1 not available for Win7, only Win8

don't believe the hype...

As a huge gamer I'm not sure I, or most gamers will be missing much in the way of DX11.1. Let's not forget DX11 didn't exactly take off when first released. At any rate I can soundly say that "if" I move to 8, it won't be because I didn't have DX11.1 on Windows 7.

Anyway I find it funny, if not disingenuous if you will, that Microsoft is trying to "force" people to W8 because of DX11.1, when they haven't really done much to enhance PC gaming since releasing their Xbox.

Basically we have Microsoft telling gamers if you want DX11.1, move to Windows 8, yet at the same time not really supporting the PC platform because hey, that would take away sales from our Xbox gaming consoles. Hmmm... for some reason this clip comes to mind...

I really do not understand this misconception people have about windows 8. They think that just because they like it everybody on the planet should like it as well. They just can't possibly understand why some don't like it. Personally it doesn't work for me on a desktop PC. I'm much happier with Windows 7 on a non touch enabled device. If I ever manage to get a tablet I'll be more than happy to run Windows 8 on it.

:focus:
As far as Directx 11.1 goes, I personally don't see that as all that big a deal. I'm a gamer but I hardly ever have the latest and greatest video card or game for that matter. Unless you're cutting edge I don't see it as a big deal. Its certainly not something that is going to make me run out and buy Windows 8.

Hi there
actually if you read my posts I DID mention for some things (classic desktop apps) W7 was fine -- but for others such as decent Touch applications --of which there are many new one's in the pipeline W7 is HORRIBLE and W8 better for those type of apps.

You wouldn't use a Ferrari for driving around slopes of Volcanos to gather a lot of scientific data -- or you wouldn't use a push bike to win a Formula I race.

Tools for the job -- W7 is better for some things, W8 for others.

New advances always bring new challenges -- some people are up to it - others just attempt to stick with what they have and like for as long as possible --fine if they have no need of newer stuff but imagine some of the advantages - like if you want to plot some graphs on a spread sheet imagine how nice it would be if you could just use touch to enclose the set of figures you want and drag into a spread sheet like app where the graph would be calculated and drawn --much easier than entering by hand a load of data into a spread sheet and having to apply all sorts of complex formulae to plot your graph.

I'd get my work done a load quicker with the new touch app (when its developed - and these type of apps are already on the developers benches) than with the classical desktop model. !

I totally agree with you, to a point. I don't use a touch screen on my desktop PC and likely never will. I find Windows 7 easier to use on that PC. There is nothing in Windows 8 that makes me want to spend the extra cash to upgrade my desktop PC. I have very limited finances as I live on a disability. It has nothing to do with wanting newer stuff, I just can't afford newer stuff. I'm sorry I dragged this thread off topic but it just irks me when people infer that there is something wrong with you because you rejected Windows 8. I should have just bit my tongue and kept my mouth shut.

Hi there
Nope don't keep your mouth shut !! Reasoned arguments are always valid - and of course in some circumstances like yours the choice isn't available in any case.

I do agree there are people who often say -- You MUST use this because it's better than the old stuff. And this is where it gets stupid.

Horses are great to ride - but for the majority of people the Car has supplanted the use of these for normal transport and powered ships have surplanted Sailboats - but the pleasure sailboats or horses give can't be explained to people who just want to take their car and drive it as fast as possible whatever the terrain or road conditions --what on Earth do these people do with the extra time when they get home -- just flake out watching some mind numingly boring reality show or the latest set of dysfunctional families on some TV daytime Soap.

My point was basically to say WHERE POSSIBLE look at the new and potentially extremely good stuff just beginning to become onstream and don't always say the existing stuff is better.

I remember years ago when it was regarded as a privilege to have a telephone (landline) in the house at all and you had to go on a waiting list to get one at all -- and that could take months !!! (almost as bad as waiting for a "Trabi" in the old E.Germany (DDR).

Nowadays almost everybody has a mobile phone - surely if people hadn't developed mobile communications some of us would still be using Carrier Pigeons for our mail and pieces of tin can tied with string for our voice communications - to say nothing of being able to use Forums like this on the Internet.

Here's a pic of the Old E.German Trabi -- had a leaky smelly two stroke engine and ran on Lawnmower Fuel. Bodywork was made out of PLASTIC too.

People had to put their names on a waiting list for these cars and some had to wait 17 years or more to get one --- as soon as a baby was born its name was put down on the waiting list for one of these "Cars" !!

I don't know if there are any people from the old DDR who read this Forum but I'm sure that those who spent most of their life "on the OTHER side of the wall" will readily agree that trying to get one of these "contraptions" was nearly an impossible task. In fact the first thing most of these people did as soon as the Wall came down was to get a "Proper Car" --as did most of the other people from E. Europe as soon as the old Soviets had "shut up shop".

Give me my "Beamer" any day. !!!!

Cheers
jimbo

Actually Jimbo, they were made of a compressed card material, something like very hard cardboard. I did not believe that, but during my service in BAOR and the FRG, I saw one. Apparently, after Reunification, they became THE car to buy, for a certain minority of "Art Pharts" in the West. Driving behind one meant not breathing in, until after you overtook. I asked a German friend what he thought they ran on. After a short pause, he said "Kartoffeln!" (Cabbages!)

I'll be a believer when I see a side by side comparison. Give me numbers with the same equipment running a game, say FarCry 3. Until then, they won't get me to upgrade to 8. I also believe that 8 has it's place, but desktops isn't one of them. Now,if I could keep the "classic" look and interface of 7,but have the 'under the hood" of 8,I'll jump onboard right now.:)

Greg -

This can be done by grafting on the actual Win7 start button Menu using Windows 7 explorer for Windows 8, which when toggled on doesn't load Metro into RAM and thus seems a bit faster for some.

The gadgets can also be replicated using 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8 and undock them.

What you get with these two inexplicably forgotten features is almost the same as Win7 but defaults to Win8 crApps adjustable in Default Programs. Some think its faster but it can't compel me to boot into it even on a Win8 Dual Boot. I prefer the perfect desktop experience which Win7 provides and isn't showing the slightest sign of age yet.

Not really

Actually you DON'T; you need DX, but not necessarily DX11.

Anyway as pointed out previously, I'm am a BIG time gamer. All you have to do is look towards the games forum here. Also: http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/77293-tips-troubleshooting-game-issues.html - steps 5 & 6.

That said, if you look at gaming overall, DX11 is really just starting to become the norm as more and more games support it. But for a while, a lot of games were still being released in DX9 or 10 mode, only to be patched to 11 later. Now you are starting to see more and more DX11 titles; however, as of yet there are no DX11.1 titles on the horizon: List of games with DirectX 11 support - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, (forgot about this earlier) Microsoft DID release some DX11.1 features to Windows 7...

Portions of the “DirectX 11.1 Runtime” are being made available on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 via the Platform Update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB 2670838) included with the Internet Explorer 10 Release Preview for Windows 7. This includes the updated components above, but is limited to WDDM 1.1 drivers on Windows 7.
Source: DirectX 11.1 and Windows 7 - Games for Windows and the DirectX SDK - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Sure, we didn't get everything (Windows 7 update brings some DX11.1 features - The Tech Report) but I'm thinking it's a matter of time, especially if 8 bombs.

Also note that at this time there are no "true" DX11.1 GPU's out yet. Now whether this can be implemented via a software update remains a mystery; but consider this: thus far DX10-11 have been hardware implemented by both NVidia and AMD (ATI) so...? However, I'm sure there's something on the horizon.... and, both ATI & NVidia are seeing dollar ($) signs here ;)

At any rate, as I said before, I'm not so sure gamers will be missing much between DX11 and DX11.1. And, by the time it does catch on... the fate of Windows 8 may well be determined by then.

My two cents.

Sygnus21 is right people were still using 9 and 10 versions because of xp and vista upgrades

There probably won't be a real difference in a .1 driver I mean really half of the time they come out to Sh*t anyway excuse my languge but that is the truth

it takes a good 6 months to a year to perfect all the defects and performance issues and most of the public don't even take advantage of it or use it anyway

PCI- 3.0 is out but a majority are using 2.1 or later so i mean by the time it is really needed about 3 years or so down the line Windows 8 will be a afterthough because a better more Quality Os would have been made either to mirror a form of windows or MS gets there head out of the hole and think of the Programers and encoders ....

I almost think they made Win8 to stop hackers but lets be real that will never happen :D

At any rate, as I said before, I'm not so sure gamers will be missing much between DX11 and DX11.1. And, by the time it does catch on... the fate of Windows 8 may well be determined by then.

I started playing Far Cry 3 with my old system which had a GTX 275. Built my new sytem and started playing it over again. If there is a major difference between DX10 and 11,I didn't see it. So unless there is something major between 11 and 11.1,as stated,we probably will never see it.

Sygnus21 is right people were still using 9 and 10 versions because of xp and vista upgrades

To be clear I wasn't exactly thinking XP when making that statement. There are still games made with Windows 7 in mind, but still utilize DX9 instead of 10 or 11.

Point is some game developers still weren't using the DX11 API despite designing for Windows 7.

Well ,I didn't mean to put words in your mouth :o

I just ment most people still use older platforms and the time frame it takes people to Migrate to a newer os and features just isn't worth jumping on something that says it's the latest

People are driven to get the best of the best 75% of the time they end up disapointed and that is because the hype made it more then what it really was

I heard about this from an avid gamer who said this is how he is being pushed into Win8 even though he loves Win7 and doesn't want to downgrade.

He kept referring to latest DirectX so I thought he probably meant 12, but researching it I only found the story about 11.1. Is this some type of beta for 12, or does it become 11 once it's installed like a SP becomes Win7?

Far as i know win 7 has it complete when you install it with sp1
but it still shows up as using 10 anyway I would think it would be inputed into the video drivers more then it is being run in windows

Pretty much it's useless there trying to scam people like the African Lottery

Your screen shot shows Direct x 10 because that's all your video card will support. Mine shows the same thing but if I run dxdiag it shows Direct X 11
