Hi All

I`ve had a 20m network cable installed in my new house to run from my PC upstairs to the tv/ps3/apple tv downstairs.
I connected the rj45 plugs in myself and tried a network tester which appeared to show that all the connections were fine. But if I try and connect either the laptop, playstation 3 or apple tv to the cable and the other end into my network switch box it says on all devices "no network cable connected".

I tried a laptop on the switcher with another cable and it connects instantly. So it appears there is an problem with the other cable, but why would the network tester say its fine? Any ideas?

Thanks alot

Paul

I'm a little confused,

"I`ve had a 20m network cable installed in my new house to run from my PC upstairs to the tv/ps3/apple tv downstairs".

Do you mean, You've had a 20M network cable connected to your ROUTER, and then it uplinks to a Switch upstairs. Then your ps3,apple tv and TV plug into the switch?.

If so, Make sure the cable is connected properly into the switch and Router,
Did you put the Clip "ends" on each end of the 20M cable yourself?. Of was it a complete cable when you got it,
If you manually did it, Did you follow a Cross Over cable diagram or a CAT5 diagram.

The network cable goes from the PS3 downstairs to the switch box upstairs, i then have the router and pc upstairs connected to the same switch. I tried connecting directly to the router but still nothing.

I put the clip ends on myself using a cat5/6 diagram. I used the one on the left (T568A) on here.

Did you do T568A at both ends?.

If not, You're crossing the cables over. They need to match at both ends.

see Diagram below, I believe thats how they should be paired

Wrong, You're crossing the cables over. They need to match at both ends. see Diagram below, Also look at each end of another cable you have and you should see that they match.

Sorry I meant that both ends of the cable match the diagram on the left. Theyre not crossed over, both ends have the green/white on the right hand side when plugged in. Also why would the network cable tester I have show no problems? It lights up each connection in sequence.

All the cables I have here have the same configeration of the IMG i've attached,

Id suggest taking the ends off, And adding new ones, using the pairs in the Diagram i've posted above.

But would the network cable tester not show up a fault if the wires were incorrect?

Sorry, rewired one end and now its working. So looks like the cable tester I just bought is completely useless.

The cable table was probebly correct, If the pairs are miss matched, It will still pass through. The cable tester, Test for breaks in the cable.

glad its working now.
