choosing a new dual dvi graphics card....

aloha!

already have nec monitor using the dvi connection. got a new dell and tried it with the vga but it flickered badly. swapped connectors now the dell works great w\dvi and the nec flickers with the vga.

looks like a dual dvi is in the works. only need it for graphics/PS work. don't do games or video making.

what are the ins and outs of dual dvi cards? suggestions? not much computer stuff choice here in hawaii, best buy is the main location, but internet purchases are common.

just want to do what's needed to get 2 dvi ports...

I suppose I could add a single port dvi card if that would work AND the onboard motherboard would also work, and they don't cancel each other out. just want to get what's needed and not more.

As far as I know, but don`t quote me, you can only use 1 or the other, the motherboard or the card.

But you can run multiple monitors off this card and it`s cheap.

why are the dvi outlets different looking?

on the suggested cards I see 2 dvi plugs but they do not look the same. will the dvi cables that comes with my monitors fit both of those plugs?

1 is DVI-D and 1 is DVI-I

Yes, your dvi cables will fit in both, the difference is 1 is all digital and 1 is digital and analog.

The 1 with the extra holes is used to attach a dvi to vga dongle, to go to a crt monitor.

It depends on the MOBO. Some, like some of the ASUS boards, will allow you to run both onboard video and GPU cards simultaneously.

That's one reason. Also, I saw an ASUS YouTube video where, via some kind of software, the onboard graphics could be used to boost the GPU card graphics (I don't pretend to understand how that works).

For ATI/AMD cards, this is called Hybrid Crossfire: ATI Hybrid Graphics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It allows you to use the onboard chipset of certain motherboards to work with the discrete video card to boost performance. Because of design and functional changes, only certain boards would work with certain cards. As it is today, crossfire still limits the ability to pair cards together because of the same thing. new design changes etc.: AMD CrossFire

Nvidia also does this in roughly the same manner. Hybrid SLI technology
