Well us billion + also buy those mobile toys and use them where and how they were designed.
Us billion + also by Windows Word, Office and other Windows programs to use where they were designed to be used. On a useable Desktop.
Just because one wants a useable and productive desktop or laptop doesn't mean they don't buy the mobile devices and use them as mobile devices. These are people or companies that are part of both markets. What company would stop using a desktop just to add a tablet to their inventory of equipment?
They will use both to meet the needs or desires of the company.
If Microsoft develops a mobile operating system that is not compatible to sync with Windows 7 or a usable and productive Windows 8 that is their fault not the customers fault.

That's an excellent question Bear. In fact I'd add a couple words to the question......
What KIND of company would stop using a desktop just to add a tablet to their inventory of equipment?

I will say the days of the dedicated "desktop OS" is over as we know it. That was yesterday, this is today.

For consumption, perhaps; but for production (which fuels the consumption that smartphones/tablets excel at) and "specialized" consumption such as heavy-duty gaming, desktops (and laptops to a smaller extent) can do things that would be unreasonably difficult, if not outright impossible, to do on smartphones and tablets.

I wrote programs for my first computer in 1958 and have dealt with computers ever since. And I think they will still be around in 2058 - and I mean computers, not playmobile toys for the kids.

To be clear, I didn't say the desktop was dead, I said the desktop OS as we now know it is over. I predict Microsoft will stay the Windows 8 course while addressing the inadequacies it had with for desktop users. In short, we'll still get a 8 like OS - sign in for this and that, while making sure desktops users aren't inconvenienced. And if Blue fixes the desktop issues, us "geeks" may finally buy into it.

'Twould be too late for me. I've already invested in three copies of Win7 (two Ultimate and one Home Premium) and I plan on getting my money's worth from them, clear up to 01/01/2020.

Rush, smush, I just wanted to be sure I could get my copies before they disappeared. I wish I had bought a spare Win7 notebook before the prices on them skyrocketed. Not all of the Win8 machines can be upgraded to Win7.

You are not likely to get any service packs. The updates with keep coming. Makes it awkward to reinstall.

I have updated my installtion images already. My own SP2 if you like. Takes a little time but is actually quite easy.

At this point in time I feel like it's a waste of money as 7 isn't suddenly going to drop off the face of Microsoft. And they still have the business community to support.

Besides, unless you develop a way to stock pile all the updates, it'll be a moot point - what's the use in having the OS if you can't get the updates.

Anyway I think this is a bit drastic, but that's me.

SIW2 has the answer (other than 42): make an image of the Win7 installation after all the updates have been installed. When doing a "clean" installation of the OS using the image, make another image after the updates that were released since the previous updates have been done.

There have been over 500 updates released - only about 130 needed.

Works well for repair install also.

However, I'm missing something. I have a spare OEM and a retail version of W7.
1) How does this help me/us when I want to install on a new build?
2) Aren't security updates a moving target and if this support ceases won't the PC be vulnerable?
3) Have MS provided a date when update downloads (on top of SP1) will cease?

That will be the 2020 date MS gave - security updates will keep coming.

Makes no difference. Install exactly the same as you always do. It is just that the updates are already in - saves a lot of time.

Not using any machine specific ones - if you have some - then windows update will offer them - together with graphics card driver ( unless you want to include that yourself - bit pointless they keep pushing out new ones ) - and a couple of things you don't want , like bing desktop - just hide them.

I set things up, too - start menu is how I like it - my context menu items, minimate, and so on.

I tried to create a W7 install disc with SP1 and all of the updates up to July 2012 (using RT Se7en Lite).
It didn't work.
When the install got to the last stage (Preparing your desktop) it just stopped.
