The Non-Touch Windows 8 Offers a Worse Experience than Windows 7, Says Analyst

Windows 8, Microsoft’s latest bet in the operating system world, comes with great touch-optimized features, most of which are also available in the RT version supposed to be deployed on tablets.

While it’s also developed to serve as a major upgrade over Windows 7, the new operating system doesn’t make much sense on a computer that doesn’t feature a touchscreen display, Forrester senior analyst David Johnson said in an interview with InformationWeek.

Many Windows 8 PC buyers are actually asking retailers to downgrade to Windows 7, even though their newly purchased unit comes with a touchscreen unit but, in most cases, keeping the new software without such a display is a waste of time.

Good find Night Hawk. Always nice when a "Senior Analyst" has your back!
One more good example of how dumb W8 was designed that I haven't heard much about; There's no "X" in the top right of the screen with which to close a program. When I've messed with em in the store, the only way to close a program is to go to the top of the screen and drag the top edge to the bottom of the screen like pulling down the shades on the windows in your house. Strictly a phone or tablet manuever, but for a desktop that is really an awkward and slower way to close a program!

Really, how hard would it have been to add an "X" at the top right as a second option for the sake of the desktops???
I'm not sure if that was just stupid or if M$ was just kicking dirt in the face of desktop users.
W8 is just like that though, it's designed for mobile units and M$s attitude is that desktop users can just kiss M$'s
arrogant rear end.

Well take a look at the new Lock screen when first booting up on an 8 pc where someone assigned a password, pin code(new), or image file(also new) to log in with and notice you click and pull that up like a "Window(s) shade" as well. It's an easy way to close a full screen app without minimizing it to click an X button in one corner but item not know about much either! Awkward and "hidden from user as usual"!

The blog writers now have something to keep bashing MS over for the time being at least! The awkward clumsiness of seeing the tablet touchscreen and swipe type gui along with hidden tool bars and popup menus and screens makes it too clumsy for the typical home user who wants things "Plain and Simple"! For the more advanced multi-tasker this becomes a hassle where the 3rd party apps then become the life saver for someone planning to stay with 8!

Apparently the one thing MS failed to learn from the previous "flops" while they may not be remembered over time by some that way if found they where simply misunderstood is that "Hindsight makes Waste"! The blog writers call that being MS taking a gambit?!

I like the part where the author points out the MS angle of "passing the blame" as far as touchscreen displays not being massed produced instead of admitting they didn't actually work on a touchscreen capable gui for the desktop platform as they should have for any newer major release!

They short changed the desktop user instead by slapping a tablet gui onto what they call a new version while not actually any newer at the desktop level! The core was stripped out while seeing certain other things improved on. Hopefully Blue or whatever will prove to be MS waking up again like they had for 7 and coming out with an actual newer "Desktop" version.

And my reply is virtually the same in all of them.

I'm not talking out of my posterior here either. Without intending to sound arrogant, I do know a fair bit about computers and the software that runs on them. I'm not offering a resume or proclaiming to know everything, but for the average end user - bypass metro and you have a better Underlying Os than 7. It should be, it's a bloody tweaked version of it.


I could blah for paragraphs but I shan't.


My personal usage speaks enough for me. I no longer have win 7 on my sig rig. It's on my laptop, but i use 8.


If 7 is the new XP and 8 the Vista - then the same argument is still applicable.

If a user has really given it a go and still hates it, fair do. But until then....




(Ps I know it's a commercial flop. No doubt in my mind it would be. But the areas in which it fails are areas that don't affect me personally. To me, using 8 daily feels like a tweaked skinned seven.



Tablet wise, it needs maturity in both software and hardware. iPad 4 now isn't? Android didn't pop up overnight either.

Well the facts speak for themselves! While MS teams were working at the core level those same teams do not work on what any newer version's desktop will look like. This time around MS was too busy with RT and ARM to be bothered with any new desktop development when going to replace Aero! They simply grabbed the RT gui which was designed for Tablet not Desktop OSs!

Every new blog will simply point out the same thing! MS took a shortcut to slap out a new something for OEMs while not spending any time developing what "could have been" a new touchscreen capable "Desktop" gui which would have made more sense then looking at large ugly buttons and stripping away features like the Media Center and video, dvd playback support from the latest WMPlayer.

Well you can look at it this way too. When people complained Windows costs too much they now have their wish at seeing the low prices 8 came in with but now only half the OS it was! Everybody happy now? The core saw improvements while the rest of the OS... "hey where did everything go?!"

Nobody had to tell me it was ugly, I saw that myself.
Nobody had to tell me it was built for a phone and tablet, I experienced that myself.

I have an IPhone and the wife has an IPad Mini and I think they're both fine as phones and tablets go, but nobody had to tell me I don't want either one for a desktop.

I bought XP, Vista, and W7, and I would've bought W8 if they hadn't screwed it up so bad, but they did so I won't.

They spoiled us. They gave us a operating system that worked. No longer did we have to add a bunch of do dads and ding dongs with 3rd part programs to make the operating system to work properly. They called it Windows 7. What did we do? We bought Windows 7 by the droves at full price.

Plan (A) worked for Microsoft and the consumer.
I like it when a good plan comes together.

You fall into the 'fair do' category. You personally tried it. You didn't like it. Fair do


Tbh, I only bought 2x8 upgrade copies so I could use it myself in order to help others. But I found I liked it enough despite it's massive testicle sized failures. I used to be a 8 hater myself. UNTIL I COULD IGNORE METRO . From then, as I said, it's just like using a skinned seven.


(Resume time lol, I`ve used 7 since build 6801. I've seen good and bad ms directions during dev. 8 had "wrong and mega fail” stamped all over it from the first build with metro. Frankenbleh from get go. )


I don't dispute the facts-I just don't want another X amount of years of updated-to-8 vista bashing from the 2nd handers Use it and hate it. Don't just agree with someone who "know computers". Kick them in the mother/father bag. Hard. Kick till the banana splits.


(Yes, I liked Vista despite its obvious limitations. Seven is a tweaked vista. 8 is a tweaked 7 with crap added. Clearly there's more to it, but people should get the drift )




Lack of Aero? meh. I also use Linux. I'm used to it. I don't really miss it either.


Changing inactive window colours to varying colours per task SHOULD have been mandatory however.




Simply put despite all naysaying - it's not as shit as most people think.

If you have seven and like it - Stick with it. It's certainly not an upgrade I have recommended to anyone. I can tolerate the crap whilst seeing the good. Average consumers don't, nor should, see the the crap.

i use windows 8 on our laptop ,it came pre-installed and i have had to get used to it. i had it as a dual boot with 7 on the previous laptop,i rarely used it.
after less than 2 weeks of using 8 i love it. i use start8 to bypass the metro start at boot. i have little need for apps but those i have i enjoy.
i am still finding new things every day and its fun.
when i use 7 on the desktop i find it dated now as did i find vista after using 7 for a while.
there are features in 8 i don't find great but they are minor in comparison to the advantages of it.

"I Love It When A Plan Comes Together!" :roflmao: A little something from the old "A Team" series I see! 7 became the "Windows Champion A #1 OS" and then they tabletsized it with nonsense to promote their new Surface and Surface Pro tablets to compete with Googlitis at the cost of the desktop OS. They actually would have better off simply naming Windows 8 as the Windows RT desktop edition as I have been saying all along! It's not any major desktop release when you find a tablet gui on it!
