You can still repair boot sectors in Linux similar to Win.
Repair tools on Linux discs are far more intensive the hard part is working out the names.

Just loaded Linux Mint 14 Mate on a spare hdd/partition and boot either via bias.

I meant from the HDD (not a Live Linux CD/DVD).
I have all of my operating systems on the same HDD (triple boot).

Then you can boot off a cdrom and repair the boot sector files, or replace them.

Besides. did prefer "lilo" instead of "grub"

I think that on a Windows 8 refusenick topic thread, discussion of alternatives should not be considered 'off tiopic'.

The discussion of alternatives is to be expected - but not the vagaries of installation of said alternatives, this would be better placed in the installation and setup forum, it's not news or related to windows 7 as per point 4 in the guidlines

One fact: If Windows 8 had that shiny Aero, most people would have simply liked it and dumped Windows 7. General human psycology, they unconsciously like what appears better!

loads of people -- me included didn't like AERO so for us it's no loss at all.

I'm not an internal OS specialist so I've no idea how difficult it is to implement that feature or how it would affect the performance of the OS -- but Linux in its time also had problems with these types of effects -- was it called something like COMPIZ with all sorts of special desk effects including revolving pyramids etc -- however it seemed to cause more problems than it was worth trying to install it.

The loss of transparency is a disappointment to some. I don't think it is a dealbreaker.

The real problem with 8 is the forcing of the mobile phone interface. Most of us have a pretty good idea where that is leading.

The performance aspect may have been one reason why they dropped the Aero. But that would probably only apply to PC weaklings.

They dropped it to increase battery life. They are having problems with that on Surface Pro etc.

Windows is much less efficient than Linux.

I remember that from Mandrake/Mandriva, I think those effects were to entice the younger generations impressed by sparkle. Being an old fart I just kept those switched off, preferring a flat 2D environment to work in.

It may not be much but I've always considered 'glam' like that to be a waste of CPU cycles best used to get work done.

Acer’s President Jim Wong told Bloomberg, “Windows 8 itself is still not successful...the whole market didn’t come back to growth after the Windows 8 launch, that’s a simple way to judge if it is successful or not.”


Japan’s Fujitsu echoed those sentiments, calling the demand for Windows 8 “weak.” Meanwhile, the president of Samsung’s memory chip division told Korea Times (via CNET) that Windows 8 was “no better than Windows Vista.” Windows Vista was widely panned by critics.


Samsung’s president went on to blame the struggles of Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) Ultrabook-makers on the “less-competitive Windows platform.”

The OEMs can supply new systems with Windows 7 - but you have to ask for it (a couple of my family did). I understand that there was a court ruling that the OEMs have to comply if you ask.

If everyone starting requesting this, then maybe the OEM's could present these statistics to Microsoft, and then they will have a change of strategy?
