Seems there must be some program out there that will create a searchable Explorer-like document (such as html) of the contents of an external USB drive. Anyone know? I can already create lists but I am looking for something as described above.

You can create a text document.

1. Launch command prompt.
2. Let's assume your external drive is 'X:' and it is plugged in.
3. Now type in X: and hit Enter.
4. Now enter this command:

Code:
dir x:\ /s > x:\filelist.txt

Now you'll find a text document containing the entire list at X:

Please remember to replace X with your external drive letter.

Thanks for the replies. Actually, I am able to generate a list using another software. It's also possible using cmd. But, I still haven't found something that generates an Explorer-like tree with search. Gotta be someone who's authored something like that.

"Advanced File Organizer" is what I found

After a lot of searching, Advanced File Organizer is what I found and is exactly what I've been looking for (including the word "catalog" in my Google search is what did the trick). All the directories right down to the file contents in folders of a whole drive can be saved as a proprietary .afo file, which displays in Explorer format. And, it's all searchable. CNET description says up to XP but the trial seems to run fine on Win7.

This software is inexpensive, but I'd still like to know if there's a free alternative out there.
