Dear forum,

All day long it's a struggle to get my computer to work normally. The problem is that, when I open facebook to log myself in, the entire computer freezes. The same happens when I try to play a certain browser game from KABAM. Other websites work perfectly, including youtube and webcasting sites.

The problem does not lie with Google Chrome, cause the exact same thing happens when I use Opera or IE. So it's not about my extensions. I also tried shutting down my ZoneAlarm Extreme Security, didn't help neither. The only moments when it sometimes seems to work is when I start my computer, erase computer and browser history through both CCleaner and chrome itself, restart my computer and try to log into facebook through a different login page. But it only works after my computer has been running for a few hours. And even that doesn't guarantee that it would work.

Nothing works anymore when it freezes, including CTRL+ALT+DEL and buttons don't light up anymore when i hover over them with my mouse. When there's sound playing, it plays for another 4 seconds after the computer froze and then it stops too. That's all the info I can give you. I honestly don't know what to do. I ran a scan with Trend Micro Housecall, it didn't detect any viruses.

It's been going on for a few days now.

If it's a specific website on no matter which browser, maybe it's something with Java or ActiveX or whichever plugin it uses? It's the only thing I could think of, but normally they update automatically.

It could have to do with Java Scripts or a problem URL may be fetching an advertisement or side panel that you can do without.

It freezes for a few (maybe 10) seconds, but after that it works? If I read correct what you wrote... mouse is still working then (mouse pointer moves)?

It's easy to reproduce. Let's do a test

  1. start defragging your disks. Now you see your disk light flashing all the time.
  2. goto facebook so it freezes
Is disk light still flashing all the time? If so.. defrag process is still running and computer ISN'T frozen!

If that would be so, then still I cannot use my computer normally, because I can't click anything and thus use my computer. I don't really care if it really freezes completely or it just doesn't let me do anything. I just want my computer to work again. I suppose it freezes, cause sound stops too. Is there a practical use of me doing what you said?

Create a shutdown shortcut on your desktop. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/61294-shut-down-computer-shortcut-create.html

Test if it works.

Open a browser and make the browser window smaller so you can see the shutdown shortcut. Browse to facebook so it freezes. Doubleclick on the shutdown shortcut. Does computer shutdown?

OK I did that and as soon as it froze, I clicked it. This time, though, I waited for about 40 seconds and suddenly my computer un-froze. And as soon as it did it shut itself down through the shortcut I clicked when it froze. I never waited that long though. It's a bit of a relief, but I still don't know why it jams completely for such a long time.

If I goto to www.facebook.com my computer doesn't update the screen at all. Mouse not working... all on screen stays the same. disk light is flashing during the freeze. so it's doing something. Ater about 6 seconds all is working again... and facebook page is displayed. now I can logon to facebook.

You have exactly the same (although it takes 40 seconds to unfreeze)? So is disk light flashing all the time during freeze?

This is as far as I know quite common issue. I have it on one desktop, I have seen it on several other rigs. It looks like pages with a lot of Java Script AND flash content are causing this. Facebook does this sometimes on this desktop I mentioned, Failblog almost every time, and so on. Depending on the browser I am using these freezes take from a few second up to a minute.

The common nominator I have found is that the pages causing freezing have both Java Script and flash content.

Is mouse still working during the freeze? (here a freeze of about 5 seconds. No screen update at all. Lots of disk activity during freeze)
After first facebook freeze .... facebook loads fine next time... even if I clear the browser cache. Also no extreem disk activity on second facebook load. Any suggestions?

How to view which process/thread causes all that disk activity?

No, during these freezes on the desktop I mentioned in my previous post I can do nothing, not even move the mouse. The page causing this usually loads the texts, then the system freezes before any images or Java Script / Flash content is drawn to display, when the freeze is over the page then refreshes instantly and everything works again.
