I have owned the laptop for 2 years, purchased new. a week or so ago, it started telling me I have a non genuine version of windows and need to activate.

I tried the on line system to re activate, but the key was rejected ? I then wanted to try the phone method but once validation is started, ( right click computer >activate now )I don't get the option to activate by phone, just a message saying this key is invalid.

This is very confusing, it has worked flawlessly for 2 years, I tried ringing the Australia activation ( I got the number from internet ) and was asked to enter the first 6 installation ID numbers, which I got from the MGAdiag report, but was told the number is invalid too. So I am stuck, nothing works here.

How can I get the phone activation on screen, it's not given as an option? Microsoft automatic phone person just hangs up on me.

I have done thorough scanning for malware and all is working fine, have I been hacked?

Please help,

Ron.

was asked to enter the first 6 installation ID numbers, which I got from the MGAdiag report, but was told the number is invalid too.

Which key are you using to activate this installation? You must use the 25 character product key afixed to the COA sticker stuck to the bottom of your laptop.

Regards,
Golden

The codes asked for by the Activation line are very different to those in the report.

The problem is that your system is unable to properly read the BIOS SLIC table that should be present in the system to be able to self-activate the OS.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

thanks for replies,

The sticker on the bottom is completely faded out and I am unable to read it, also none in battery case.
I can't get to the phone for activation, to enter any ID key. Any way to bring up the choice to use phone activation? I will do some searching on the BIOS SLIC table, as this must be the issue, I haven't changed anything, in over a year, so a mystery why it just started. When starting, I've just noticed a message in top left hand corner when the HP splash screen happens, "serial number not found".
Maybe has something to do with it. No Bios options to change makes it hard.
I have activated many computers online and by phone before, no idea what is going on.

So,
1. cannot change to key on case, too faded, unreadable.
2. cannot get to any phone activation, as it does not give me that option, just say's invalid key and an offer to purchase windows??
3. Can't believe that I will have to buy another copy of windows to fix this.
4. send laptop to HP and pay them to fix.
5. buy a mac.

Ron.

Your problem is that for some reason, the system is unable to properly read the SLIC table in the BIOS, which is required to be able to self-activate the OEM_SLP Key with which the computer came installed.

The normal solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker - but you say that you are unable to read the Key there.

In such circumstances, the only things you can do are

1) recreate the Licensing Store - in case it's a minor software problem causing the misread
2) try updating the BIOS to the latest available Win7-compliant one, from the manufacturer's website
3) Contact the manufacturer direct, and see if they can provide assistance to correct the SLIC table
4) a reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's recovery media
5) purchase a new license for Windows (or a new computer)

Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

Thanks Noel,

will get to these things later today after work, maybe that will get me to the phone option. No point in using the key as it's unreadable.

Things I've tried so far;

1.Disk check.
2. Ran SFC /scannow
3.rang HP, talked to tech ( at a huge cost no doubt ), who tells me that if the SLIC BIOS is faulty, only way to fix is to get a new motherboard?? Cheaper to buy new laptop. Or purchase a new copy of windows and clean install, then activate, wtf? not a simple option.

All this time and I thought 'Velcro' was a rip off :banghead:
This was top of the range 'entertainment pavilion HP' and even though we pay for the OS, they do this to us. it's insulting. (venting over ).

many thanks again, and will post results and new report asap.

Ron.

If you purchase a Full license for Windows 7 Home Premium, you can simply swap in your new Key to the current install - it will work fine.
You could also use a Full license Windows 8 to 'upgrade' the system - but I personally wouldn't go that route :)

I've heard this cr@p about needing to replace the motherboard for a SLIC table before - and it's BS. All it needs is a full BIOS flash, rather than the abbreviated flash that is released publicly. It takes about five minutes of semi-skilled labour, mostly waiting for the machine to boot at least twice.

There is also a chance of an alternative route.....

There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.
Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker, but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed from there.
Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.

Hi noel,

No luck on anything here, updated BIOS successfully, no different, then followed instructions to recreate the licence store, but nothing changed.
The activation started with the message; unable to activate, change product key, or purchase new OS. that's all, no option to activate by phone. All my attempts to phone, by using number I got from net, take me to automated answer and to continue I must put in first section of installation ID numbers, obviously, I cannot, then they say, 'goodbye'.
maybe I've tried too many times, and it's just refusing to comply.

Love the service, So it seems I'm about to get screwed again by Microsoft, and have no choice but to buy another copy of Windows.

I would love the oppertunity to be able to speak to some one at Microsoft to at least explain how to activate, but not allowed.

Many thanks again for all your help,

Best regards,

Ron.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

If that doesn't give you the number to phone (it probably won't) use the number for the Activation Center from this list, and when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Hi Noel,

Thanks a lot for hanging in here with me. No luck on getting the phone activation screen up, just same old 'not valid' screen. I do believe, if only I could get to that, then at least I would be able to do it through phone activation. It is a legal copy, I just need the option to do it.
Is there a reg setting that is preventing me from obtaining the choice, or is it doing this because I have attempted activation too many times and am being blocked. I have renamed the store and the store cache, no change.

The phone numbers you linked are the same ones I have been trying, They ask for the first 6 numbers, If I don't answer, they just say 'goodbye'. If I don't answer at all, ie, when prompted to press 1, they just hang up.

A friend suggested, roll back to when service pack 1 was installed, ( I checked restore, and it's there.)
As installing service pack 1 gives 3 more days of grace to activate, not sure if this is true. Or use the cmd of slmgr -rearm to extend it.

Only a temporary solution I feel, and I would be back here again, but maybe it would reset and give me the phone option. What do you think?

regards,

Ron.

You aren't following my instructions.
You MUST NOT respond to the ansafone at all! - as soon as you do, you end up in the automated routine, which is no good to you at all.
If the system time-outs on you try phoning back, and using the '0' key to see if that passes you through to an operator.

Hi noel,

I was following your instructions, maybe I worded it wrong, I did however persist and after 3 attempts was finally put through to a real person. They told me that I have to use the phone activation if I cannot read the key on the base, they were not willing to help in regard to making that happen, but said because I have tried ( and failed ) several times, it is not giving me that option any more. Followed by, it's a Hewlard Packard problem, take it to them.

So it seems buying a new copy of windows is the only way, I'm about done, and we've spent too much time on this.

I really appreciate all your help, The guy at the local shop has agreed, that if I buy a copy and it doesn't work, he will refund the money. At which stage the laptop gets backed up and thrown in the bin.

I will let you know if this was successfull.

best regards,

Ron.

Hi Noel,

Things started to go really weird, woke up this morning and the message to activate was gone, ? but when I tried to get online it just kept redirecting me, then the message came back etc.etc.
so I took a DDS log and posted it on Malware removal forum, not good news, infected with TDL3 rootkit possibly, and GMER is detecting an unknown MBR code. so I'm going to back up and try a reset to factory from recovery partition, or full format and purchase a new disk. Not sure which way to go yet.

Thanks Vistaking, but I have spent too much time on this.

Problem Solved; backed up files etc. Reset to factory defaults, but it still didn't activate itself, problem must be the SLIC table in the BIOS. Opened the windows activation and; VOILA, there, finally, was the option to activate by phone. which I did successfully.

Cheers guys, I'm off to have a beer, many thanks again,

Best regards,

Ron.

Hopefully, you made a note of the Product Key so you don't have to refer to your worn out COA sticker the next time it happens ;)

Hi Golden,

The phone activation uses 'an installation ID number' which comes up in boxes of 6 numbers ( 5 for product key ) when using the phone option, you read this number to them and then they give you another long number to enter in the boxes below. It is a different number than the one given in MGAdiag log. Therefore using phone option is only solution when key on base is unreadable. ( On this type of notebook, key finder does not give correct one as it's OEM. )

YES, this number I recorded,

In future I will be noting all product keys and storing on a disk, save myself a week long headache.
Weren't computers supposed to make our lives easier?

regards,

Ron.

Write it down on a strip of paper, then cellotape it securely to the inside of the case..

It's the Product Key you have to take care of - the Installation ID ( the very long numeric) can change between installs, depending on the exact hardware in use at the time.
