Have tried to use dism.exe and it worked the first time when I had a IDE hard drive and 32 bit processor. Now going to a cloned Sata hard drive with a new 64 bit processor and can't get the dism.exe program to install the new drives before Win7 64bit can load. Tried the normal repair in Win7 but no success. Wondering if I somehow need to run dism.exe as a administrator or some other way. Any suggestions?

You should get your data off the drive and re install windows, it`s the only way it`ll be right. ;)

If you`ve changed to a 64 bit cpu, you should install 64 bit windows.

Trying to not reload all my programs I use so did not want to give up on Dism usage. It was so easy the first time on another drive.

The second attempt was after I changed the registry so Win7 would load drivers for AHCI to allow my Sata drives to work better. Wonder if that is the problem. Does anyone have info on the usage of Dism.exe since it worked once for me?

I did search google already and just read the previous link you provided. Did not find an answer to my problem. Still wondering if DISM is not working this time because I changed to AHCI for the drives.

Read somewhere that dism.exe was located in syswow64 folder, but do not have such folder on my Win7 64-bit disk so I will stay with \sources folder.

For AHCI to work you first need all sata/RAID controller drivers to be present. I tend to agree with AddRAM about the need for a clean install since the drive type has changed from ide to sata making that a necessity in order to see the best working results. The AHCI mode is optional however since you can still run in the Native ide mode unless opting to see the C volume mounted as a SCSI type device.

Once you have a nice clean install of Windows regardless of whether you stay with the 32bit or move to the 64bit flavor and then proceed to restore the Windows Easy Transfer backup option(advised) once all programs are back on you can then decide whether or not to switch over to the AHCI mode. You will then be able to restore the remaining files you want to keep from the first drive before considering creating a full System Image Backup once everything is back up and running again.

If you only have the two drives the image can then be stored on the old ide drive and even placed in an external usb enclosure. I keep a 1tb drive in a fan cooled enclosure here to store images from laptops as well as a desktop or two.

I move installs around to new hardware using Paragon Adaptive Restore or Acronis True Image with Universal Restore. These installs all work just like a Clean Reinstall, once the necessary SATA drivers are supplied and the SID and HID's are removed which can block booting on new hardware.

Of course Windows provides many new drivers requiring several restarts, may need the Computer Name changed to not conflict on network, reactivation.

If you don't have access to one of these programs then you're best off to Clean Reinstall however.

The main thing to be looking at is how long has the original 7 install been in use on the ide drive? If you just recently saw a clean install there then it shouldn't be any large program seeing it cloned over in some fashion to the new sata drive. But if it is loaded up with the usual clutter on drive and in system registy typically seen over any lengthy period of time then the clean install with backups restored to that would be the solution.

Many here dump the existing install yearly if not sooner to keep 7 running at peak condition. But it also depends on how much activity as far as program installs and files created, moved around, etc. to look at as well. The 2010 install seen to in May of that year saw an image restored months later removed last June for a good clean install. I keep a few images onhand in the event there is any need.

Besides the backup options in Windows itself when mentioning Acronis as the 3rd party alternative both WD and Seagate offer their own free version for their customer base. WD's version is strictly for use on WD drives however while the Seagate rebranded as Disk Wizard free version can be used on any brand drive.

One of the advantage of Acronis is the size of the image you have to store which is often smaller on the drive when created. It seems the program does just a little more at seeing data compressed. But not only did you change drives but as indicated in the thread title main board as well? With that being a major hardware change the only best solution is a fresh install on the new hardwares.

Success! Used Acronis Home to create image of my 64 bit laptop and put it on my new 64-bit PC. When Win7 failed repair and found out that my C: drive was actually D: drive and my drivers on the flash drive was lettered F:. This is why prism failed. Once I got that correct the drivers were loaded and computer is running. Now I am just cleaning up the drive to get rid of laptop related programs. Thanks for your help.

When Win7 failed repair and found out that my C: drive was actually D: drive and my drivers on the flash drive was lettered F:. This is why prism failed. Once I got that correct the drivers were loaded and computer is running.

Please explain this as it makes no sense at all.

Did Win7 fail to start after re-imaging? Did you confirm it's marked Active and run Startup REpair up to 3 separate times to start it?

Did you set drive letter to Auto so Win7 partition would claim C as it always does in that case?

A flash or data drive letter may always change.

What is Prism?

What drivers did you load? This should be automated requiring several reboots to install the drivers it changes out, then any others updated via Windows Update. Afterwards there's rarely more than one or two still missing in Device Manager, supplied from the Support Downloads webpage for your model.

What is Prism? Prism Video Converter Software I think that's what he was referring to there. I've well familiar with the name while never actually having used it more then once if at all some time back when trying out several similar programs.

When he first installed the new sata drive the ide drive was still present and offset the drive letter from C to D. When going to install any OS and wanting the new drive to see a stand alone install the ide or first would be unplugged during the entire install.

He will need to remember that if he decides to keep the old drive in to use for storage and backup purposes if the occasion comes up for the need to reinstall Windows. for any reason since ide overrides sata when it comes to the Windows installer! Likewise the Windows installer will automatically create the BCD Store and place the boot files on the first sata drive automatically if not unplugged to see the full install go to a second drive.

That would be one thing right there to cause a problem when going to restore an image made from C on one drive(ide hd) to a second drive(sata II or III) when they are different. Upon testing images here being restored to a second sata that was never a problem since both drives were the same thing. Having no need for Sata/RAID drivers on the ide drive the drivers never went on apparently causing the restored image to stall when trying to boot in Windows.

I wrote a reply to gregrocker earlier today. Wonder where it went.

My brain was tired and meant to say I used Dism.exe to load the drivers once I found out what drive letter to use for source and destination. Worked like a charm. The reason I used it was to get the new motherboard drivers on my new PC drive with the laptop Acronis image. Otherwise the PC would not startup Win7. Used a USB dock with the old drive image (laptop) to put the files on the new single drive on the new PC.

You may have forgotten to hit the post button before leaving the thread here which can happen. I've had that happened a few times over the years. :(

For the new board you would want to be seeing the correct memory, usb, Sata/RAID type controller, and other drivers go on. But those should be right there at the Asus support site available for download once you look up the model series and number for the laptop you have there. Asus has been good over the years in that area at least in case you should end up needing to see a clean install at some point.

One thing I will add here for anyone that reads this thread and is unfamiliar with the "DISM.exe" or Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool is the walkthrough demo that runs on WMP you can download about the tool. Download Windows 7 Walkthrough: Deployment Image Servicing and Management from Official Microsoft Download Center
