Windows 7 64-bit and memory usage while downloading

I having some problems with memory in PC. (Win 7 64bit)

I use Flashget classic ver. (latest)

I left PC to run over night and i find dead PC in the morning.

It usualy runs with 600-700MB when i run PC, but after some time running Flashget i got 1,7GB+ untill PC stop respond (it has only 2GB of RAM)

Now with litlle more details..

And about 2 hours later running Flashget, downloading 250KB/sec.

When i turn off download manager, memory still stay high. Only restart helps.

Somebody said that i have too litlle memory for 64-bit Windows. Lets say thats true, will 2GB more be enouf? (4GB total) and how i will find same memory moduls almost 1,5 year after I bought this PC? Can they be different??

You are not interpreting the memory usage correctly.

In the other thread, you mentioned that your PC would crash. Can you provide any information about that?

Then why did you installed 64 bit...32-bit is quite compatible with ur hardware !...even though it may be possible that Flashget classic ver. would not be compatible with Windows 7....why not use other download managers....like Internet Download Manager or Free Download Manager ?

IN 2 hr resource you have a total of 1 gig used thats all. thats 51% according to your taskmanager, so how is this crashing your systsem? Could you upload a scrnsht of the errors in task manager relating to either flashget or any app terminating?

Btw min for 64 bit is 4 gigs

If i let it run (downloading) it would use all memory and then crash (stop responding) , i just run that 2 hour test so you can see how fast it use memory.

Few days ago i left it all night and in morning there wasnt any free memory left.

And i used wrong word "crash". It would just stop responding and flashget would stop downloading.

Before W7 64-bit i was on XP 32-bit and sometimes PC would download several days with litlle to none usage of ram.

My PC can handle 64-bit, and i was wondering whats different with 64-bit OS except expanding memory >3GB. And i needed new OS. I didnt know 64-bit is so demanding. And its not like 64-bit canot run 32-bit apps?

I didnt try with other download managers becuse some other member with same problem as me has reported that this "bug" is present with all downloaders. Maybe he was wrong, i dont know, i didnt try.

Please explain that, why is 4GB min for 64-bit Win7? Its not like i am running games, its just downloading?

If anybody doesnt understand what i am saying then look at this post, that guy has 100% same problem.

This happens to me too

Whenever I download anything over night, like a large game patch or client, when I get on the computer in the morning all but like 1% of my (4 GB) memory is used up and the computer is consequently very sluggish. Only a restart helps.

I have tried to 'flush' the memory using small apps that do this, even going so far as to have the flush tool (FreeRamXP Pro) automatically flush the memory every 10 minutes throughout the night, but it doesn't help.

I thought perhaps it was my download manager (Internet Download Manager), so I switched to the free Orbit download manager to check. The same exact thing happened. If I start a download at say 10 PM, by 6 AM the memory is full. And the computer won't respond.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you.

In this other thread about the same thing. The guy says that Nod32 was the cause of the problem. So try disabling or delating your anti virus program and see if it helps.

OMG. I have NOD32 :shock:

I hope its not it becuse if it is I will take application witch delete files with Gutmann Method and point it to C:\Program Files\ESET

A more appropriate action would be to determine what is causing your particular installation of NOD32 to have this deleterious affect.

I uninstaled ESET, tonight i will test is it now ok, if it is i might go with buying trend micro suite for special price 35$ for W7 users

At least the problem was narrowed down a bit which made it easier for you to solve. Nod32 seems to be a problem for a bunch of people. Now it looks like ESET us causing the same types of problems. One of the many reason's I can't stand using anti virus programs.

But how to protect a PC from virus then?

Windows 7 have firewall against hackers -ok.
Windows 7 have anti-spyware. -ok
But without AV software you are at virus targeting system?

Windows 7(by default) is a rock solid system, but the problem causing stuff are app and drivers written for previous versions of Windows...
The solution here is update your drivers and programs to newest versions and wait until they make a Windows 7 compatible version...
And the ONLY requirement for a 64 bit system is having a 64 bit compatible CPU.
Requirement is not for RAM(it only expands the address of RAM increasing capacity - i have an older comp with 1.5 GB RAM running faster and more stable than a 32 bit OS)

chev65 is an advanced user. It is reasonable to conclude that he is taking the appropriate measures to ensure that he does not infect the network in the event that his system is compromised. A person of lesser qualifications would be thoroughly bashed for making such a statement.


I do not like using AV software either. I use AV software, nonetheless.

I agree, my PC is significantly faster with Windows 7 64-bit then with Windows XP 32-bit, i realy like it. I am still on 30 day test, but i am 100% sure that i aint coming back to XP, wich is great OS also and it serve me perfectly from 2002. As for memory thing, i have 2GB and on idle W7 use 500-600MB, and it left enouf memory even for games (i played game Spore @max settings). But anyway, i will add 2GB more becuse its "cheap" investment

I've found Windows 7 64-bit takes about 300-400mb more than 32-bit. Temperatures of the Processors are also increased by about 5c. These are the results of my tests. I think the temperatures of the HDD are also higher but not sure about this one.

Still, I do notice the 64-bit being more responsive, the 32-bit has lag when shutting the same programs, opening apps. No it's not a placebo effect!

Overall I think if you play games on your system, you should get at least 3GB RAM and 64-bit. If you have less than 3GB RAM, you can still get 64-bit with fast performance, just don't bother playing any games. There simply won't be enough RAM for smooth gameplay.

There are exceptions however, like software not working/32-bit emulation being slow on 64-bit. One example being Sandboxie. I myself have 32-bit, will switch to 64-bit as soon as it's confirmed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has same performance in 64-bit compared to 32-bit.

Update!

Ok, i got 4GB RAM, i have uninstaled ESET and now use Microsoft Security Essentials and everything is working great

Now W7 rate my system like this:

Processor: 6,5
Memory: 6,7 (Before memory upgrade 5,3)
Graphics: 7,1
Gaming graphics: 7,1
Hard Disc: 5,8
