how to add description & author info, to a file in windows 7 explorer?

I have audio files from my phone, mostly these are self recording audio notes describing the place, people I met or interesting topics we discussed during travel, or some creative idea in my mind when I am out traveling.

Now there is lot of info recorded as audio notes & I want to give them some description & author.

In windows 7 explorer, I have enabled the description, comment & author tabs but how do I actually add author & description to these .amr files? These changes (if possible) should be viewable on my laptop or any other computer too.

Is it possible to do that in windows if not is there any other freeware utility which can do the same?

Hello Ranjan,

Have you tried Right Clicking the file, clicking on Properties, and then on Details?
If not, you can add a lot of information there, such as the Artist, Title, Genre and Comments.

You can also do it the way TwoCables suggested. Simply navigate to your files (if they are on your phone, plug the device in or use apps like Dropbox to copy them) and copy them to the default location of your music files (most of the time that is C:\users\your account\Music.
After that, open Windows Media Player and the files should automatically be imported. If not, click on Organise, select Manage libraries and then hit Music and then select your desired location and click on Add.

Once the files are imported to the WMP library you can easily edit them by pressing on the desired tab (like Title and Composer). If you want to add a custom tab, simply right-click the tabs, and select Choose columns... and then scroll down to Custom 1, check the box and press Show.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh wow, wow, wow, wow. I did not know that the Details tab in a media file's Properties could be edited like that! I mean, I've just never tried! I've looked at that tab, but I never put my mouse over any of the information in there! Hahaha wow. If I had, then I would have seen how I can edit anything I want!

Nice.

No, why?

I'm dead serious, but also enthusiastic about it. Is this a feature that was added to Vista and 7? Or has it been like this since like Windows 95?

For the record: I would never ruin a thread or good advice by being sarcastic like that (I can see what you're seeing, but again, I am not being sarcastic).

For as far as I can remember it's been here since at least Vista. I don't remember ever actually using 95 or 98, so I can't tell for those.

Anyhow, let's keep this thread about Ranjan his problem. If you'd like to know more about it, I bet one of our fellow Forum members knows all about it, and if not, Google is always your best friend:)

Yeah, it makes sense to me because Vista and 7 are very similar. I don't remember the Details tab in 95/98/XP looking quite like it does in Vista and 7!

Thank you, Nommy!

If you have the Details pane activated some of this basic properties information can be added without accessing the properties of the files,
Organized on the top left of the explorer window/ Layout/ Details pane.
See if this will save you a few clicks.

Omg, Facepalm. lol

Thank you, ThrashZone!

I had no idea that those fields down there at the bottom could be edited!

This makes wonder what other 'hidden' things like this there are... Here I thought I knew Windows 7.

Edit: I was confused by what you meant at first, so here's what I did in order to make it very clear about what we're talking about:

  1. Click "Organize" on the top left inside the folder
  2. Go to "Layout" and then enable "Details pane". You'll know it's enabled when a check mark is next to it.
  3. The details pane is at the bottom of the folder's window and it shows details for any file that you have selected.
  4. Select a media file (left-click it one time)
  5. Hover over some of the details at the bottom and you'll see that they can be edited!
This is a good reminder to me that you really do learn something new every day.

Note: There are still a few things that are in the Details tab that are not shown in the Details pane.

Thanks for all the answers but none of this works on .amr files.
Have you tried Right Clicking the file, clicking on Properties, and then on Details?
If not, you can add a lot of information there, such as the Artist, Title, Genre and Comments.
I know & have been doing this for jpeg image files but the detail tabs doesn't show the same info for .amr files.

Windows Media player neither can play these .amr files nor add them in library even when I added the location in WMP, the only option I have found is a software xnview as of now which lets me add description & comments column but it will only show within xnview not in windows explorer.

Other option is to convert huge amount of files to .mp3 & then organize it which I am avoiding as of now due to numbers of file is in few 1000s

If I remember correctly then both QuickTime and RealPlayer (and possibly VLC media player) can open and play .amr files.
I personally don't like RealPlayer, but if it can play a file, there's a big chance that it can add information to it as well. Do note that I am not completely sure of this.

If you are wanting to edit the info on several thousand files I would use a third party tool if I were you, but I sadly do not use any of those, and so I can't properly advise you there.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Yes there are limitations but for the basics it works very well,
I have not found a way to dictate what is shown,
Nothing relevant comes up in any search I've done,
Possibly Brink will come to the rescue one day :)
