There was lightning near my house today when it struck the power went out for a second and when it came back the Internet didn't work. And my network says Unidentified Network and when I troubleshoot it I get "local area connection" doesn't have a valid ip configuration. I'm not really sure what to do, I hope it isn't but it kind of seems like a hardware problem but I don't know enough to say so

If you have a cable modem, unplug power from it for about 2 minutes. Then power it up again. If you also have a router, unplug power from it for a short time, then power it up again. Then re-boot your computer. Let us know if this works. Who is your internet provider ? You may have to call them to do an electronic reset.

I have done what you said nothing changed, my ISP is Time Warner. I remember some things I forgot in the OP it is only my desktop that will not connect the wireless networks work fine. I checked the IP on the desktop and it is 169.254, APIPA if I remember correctly. Maybe my on board nic card is fried

Hmm I can't even access my router or modems settings. This is looking more and more like a hardware problem

Are the network adaptors showing up in Device Manager? The IP you describe usually means that the machine isn't connected to the router so it's picking up the default Msoft IP.

You might try shutting the down the machine completely, then unplug the power and push the power button to bleed off all power, plug the machine back in and see if anything changes.

How would I do that?

Yes they are showing up. I tried doing so nothing changed.

I went and bought a new nic card to see if it was a hardware problem and it just gives me

"Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device. To use this device, contact your computer manufacturer to obtain a firmware or BIOS update. (Code 35)"

under device status in the device manager. It also has an orange triangle on it. Any way to fix this?

It seems like resetting the modem would help here.

For the PC with the problems, try using system restore or clearing the cmos may fix the board problems from the lighting.

I reset the modem still there for the laptop. I'm not really sure how to do that I'll go research it.

I'm going to return the new nic card and getting a wireless adapter instead, now I'm thinking it could be the cables that are messed up
