Hello, I originally posted this information in the Hardware section, then thought about it and it should be here...

Good morning, I have a user that is unable to use the networked Lexmark X646E to scan documents. She is able to successfully fill out the Scan profile and send the job to the MFP, but when you go to the printer to scan the document it will scan and attempt to send the doc back to the users machine, and that is where it errors out.

Connection failure:
Unable to make a TCP connection to the server

I've came across this once in the past with a Dell Latitude E4300 laptop, and the only solution was to just swap out the laptop, so that tells me it is on the machine side not the printer. being that this is a fiscal employee I do not want to just swap out her machine, it is not that simple this time. I followed the steps I found:

To do this in Microsoft Windows 7:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Under Network and Internet, click View network status and tasks.
3. Click Change adapter settings.
4. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
5. In the "This connection uses the following items" list, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
6. Click Advanced, and then click the WINS tab.
7. Click Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server, and then click OK three times.

That setting was already set up, also no other users are reporting issues, there are two X646E's on that floor and she receives the same error regardless of which she uses.

Another saved round, last week I was deleting a computer from AD, and accidentally deleted hers by mistake. I immediately corrected this issue by disconnecting her from the domain and then re-joining her to it. Everything seemed like it went well, but a week later we have this issue.

Also, just for kicks I tried ipconfig /flushDNS, the action was successful, but I can still not receive the scan jobs, but I did learn that it the issue was not only on her profile, but the Admin's as well...

Anyone have any idea's of anything I could check?

You say other people are able to send scan jobs correct? Have you tried temporarily disabling the personal firewall on the laptop to see if that works? a TCP connection error is normally where the printer could send the file but it received no confirmation.

Josh :)

Next step, are you able to ping the device? I assume that the device will have a static IP address. Also, how are the drivers deployed on the network?

Thanks,
Josh

I can ping her workstation just fine, she does not have a static IP, nor does the MFP. The scanning ability of those Lexmark X6xx's use a web app, which even on her desktop functions as it is supposed to, and the MFP receives the job fine, processes it, scans the document, then cannot send it back to the machine.

How does the user normally receive the scanned document?

This is a lot more different than I had first thought... I had in mind that the scanned document was transferred over a LAN via 2 IP addresses. 'Unable to make a TCP connection to the server'.

Yes, you are correct, I'm sorry if I confused you, it is a networked printer and computer.

Is the machine able to print? I do apologise for all the questions, I am just clocking up in my head what it could be and the questions help to eliminate things that can't be causing the problem.

At the moment I am leaning on drivers...

Yes she can use them just fine to print. Ask all the questions you want, I'll give you every answer i know. I don't think that it is a driver issue, only because you do not even have to have the drivers installed to access the scanner function via web app, runs in a Java box, and it works just fine. We have other employees that are not set up to print to those printers because of closer B&W network printers, but still save the IP address for scanning purposes.

I apologise for the late reply as I have been working on some coursework. If you haven't solved your problem already then you may want to look into the java installed on the machine with the problem. Possibly complete a re-installation or system restore to a time when the scanning succeeded. Since printing works fine over a network then this tells me that the network configuration between the printer and client is established. The only other variable on a machine that could cause an issue is with the java which you have just stated.

Hope This Helps,
Josh
