Those of us that think Windows 7 is the best operating system ever are not running from change.
We have accepted new operating system for years and will continue to do so when the new operating system is better than the one we have already.
Just being new is not good enough. We will accept new and better.

While I do run 8, I run it strictly in desktop mode, which for all intent and purpose is essentially just like 7.

Of course, my bottom taskbar thing looks and works like the one in xp.....

Betting on M$ to come up with something better is starting to look more and more like a long shot.

That's the unfortunate downside to all this! Their main focus for 8 is basically the same it was for RT looking at the tablet as well as mobile market while straying off from the slumped desktop market.

From a corporate point of view MS wants in on the gains the Fruit company and Googlitis have been favoring. The unfortunate part of all as far as 8 is concerned is gearing it up for Tablet and simply forgetting the desktop needs. 7 on the other hand was a triumph for MS when they put something into the OS for a change having wanted everything to come out right the first time around. And 7 is here to stay for some time!

Also in a column in today's Wall Street Journal Walter Mossberg stated "I don't recommend consumers buying Windows 8 computers to opt for non-touch screen".


So Microsoft is basically implying the same thing - If you don't want a touch screen - stay with Windows 7.

Then they should be putting Win7 back on non-touchscreen PC's so they start selling again. Anything less is deliberately abetting the outlandish idea that the desktop is somehow dying out when almost all productive work - the work that drives the world's economy - is done on a desktop or laptop PC whose flagship is Win7 and will never be Win8.

Any hope they had was dashed when after a scare campaign about BIOS infection without Secure Boot, business migrating from XP decided to move 100% into Win7. Settled issue.

The alternative is for MS to clearly indicate that their business strategy is to move out of the desktop market. In my opinion an amazingly stupid decision. I would bet if someone came in to fill the desktop gap they would react in a competitive way. This is all about business decisions and customer needs.
I have had involvement in business strategy and I am at a loss to understand the logic. However, maybe MS feel an OS provider is not the way to make money anymore. Apps in the cloud are not for me.

Putting apps and data in the "Clouds" is also putting your dreams as well as personal security in the clods! as well. Want to be a clod? Buy into the MS schemes there for subscription OS!

When you see a chief gui designer(SUN Microsystems) for example openly bash the MS move with 8 as a disaster in the making you are hearing from an expert in the field who was also scratching his head at what was going on! At first sight someone like that knows it doesn't belong on any desktop machine since it simply doesn't suit the needs!

It's not just about touchscreen since 7 brought in improved touchscreen support over what Vista and the other previous versions saw but the platform specific design which isn't geared for desktop application to begin with. When you hear people slam dunk 8 not wanting a "mobile OS" or "mobile gui" they have it right in that MS simply focused on the tablet/phone platforms leaving the desktop user hanging when they went for the latest to find it wasn't what they wanted on any desktop.

i wouldnt say that windows 8 is bad its an okay OS but you can tell it was mainly designed as a touchscreen os In my opinion i wouldnt use this for work and business i would go to windows 7 for that but if you are getting a tablet or a touchscreen computer that has windows 8 on it and you arnt really doing much work or business related things keep it. but if you are opining up a business or you have a preexisting business and are upgrading computers get windows 7.

I use it and it does work well once I customised/modified or worked around the things that annoyed me about it. I ignore the cloud-based aspect of it, but do use some of the 'apps' (God, I hate that word).

And therein lies the problem. I have the knowledge and the experience to first recognise, and then fix, the things that bug me about 8.

Joe/Jane Average doesn't. So, they hate Win 8.

But it;s really not that bad.

The word "apps" niggles me a little but then so do some of the little 3 letter abbreviations and pseudo abbreviated English script.

Agree on the three-letter-abbreviations for everything nowadays.

As for the 'not that bad' comment, i wasn't trying to convince or convert anyone, just passing on my personal experience.

Yes they should, or at least give people the choice, so many people are buying a windows 8 laptop and installing
windows 7 as duel boot or just instead of windows 8 . I'm all for progress but I also love consumer choice, I'm buying it spending my money so I should beable to buy what I want to use but Microsoft seems just lately to be forcing their consumers into using something they don't want to dragging us kicking and screaming into the touch-screen , mobile, subscription, cloud based , always online new world order. It's like with the xbox one which I have spent some time moaning about on here I know ( sorry folks ) as another poster said

well that suits me fine but how long will the 360 be supported how long will I beable to buy games for it , I know they'll try to force me to move on their new system , like when they bought out win8 they stopped supporting winxp even so so many business still use it and it will cost them a fortune to update to win7 money most small businesses don't have at the moment also the last statistics I saw there were still more users of xp than win8.

I agree with you. After a skillful tuning of Windows 8 one can probably live with it. But I don't think that is good enough. The OS should be useable out of the box because, as you said, Joe and Jane will not be able to make the modifications that we are doing.

I think it would have been easy for them to generate a touchscreen UI if a touchscreen is present and a traditional UI if no touchscreen is present. They generate different OS options when they find spinning disks or non-spinning disks (SSDs). It should be just as easy to sense the type of screen they find on the system.

to ANYBODY trying W8 at the moment -- all bets are off since W8.1 offers some quite decent new features - especially for desktop users --booting directly to desktop, dynamic windowing of metro apps making them more useable for multi-monitor and large monitor setups and a better organisation of tiles when standard desktop apps are installed instead of every .exe creating its own tile are 3 that come straight to mind. There are others as well but those 3 interest me a lot.

There's also a START button - not that I really needed that feature and much better desktop / tile customisation too.

Wait for two weeks or so for the W8.1 preview -- it might not yet be exactly what the users want but it's decidedly better than the current W8. (It's also quite a bit different from some of the previous "Blue" leaked builds too).

From all I have seen of 8.1 it is not good enough for the traditional desktop user. The 'Start button' is a joke and all the other functions are still geared to tablet users.

I don't want tiles nor a cloud nor any of those new apps on my desktop. And for my tablet I am well served with Android. On my desktops I will use Windows 7 as long as possible and then I am slowly migrating to Mint Mate which is much more suitable for a non-touch setup.
