Solved 8 GB of hidden files on 60GB SSD drive?

I have read a number of optimizing threads and thought I had taken care of most unnecessary files but I must be missing something.

My C: drive is a 60 GB OCZ SSD drive. Right click on properties tells me I have 34.5 GB of files loaded but adding them up in explorer only give me 26.4 GB. A check of all hidden files led me nowhere but I couldn't look at the "Documents and Settings" file. Could there be 8 GB in there? Can I get rid of any of it?

I have attempted Kari "User file relocate" but didn't have any luck.

Hibernate doesn't come up as an option on my power button, so I assume it was never enabled. But I will check this out.

A substantial amount of disk space will be in the "System Volume Information" folder. Windows Explorer will show it as being empty but that isn't really the case. The folder contains System Restore points and previous versions of files. By default even an admin account does not have access to this folder. As Explorer is running under your account it is unable to see the contents of this folder.

You can reduce the space used for these things but this will reduce their benefits to you.

Dude, thanks. I forgot that I had seen a hidden hyberfil.sys and it totaled 5 GB or so. Anyhow, thanks again.

win7 x64 uses a lot of symbolic links to files that already exist on your pc's ssd. sadly, the OS does not subtract the file sizes from the total reported, so they effectively are counted twice tho they only exist once. most of these exist in the winsxs folder, and you should NOT mess with them. they are mostly there for compatibility reasons to allow you to run both 64 bit (x64) and 32 bit (x86) apps. if you delete any of them, or try to move them to a secondary drive, you will likely bork your system.

on the good side, the system does not fill up and stop working when it hits the wrongly reported 'size', but continues on until you actually do fill it up.

i have 8.2 gb of these files in winsxs, so your number is not unusual. use ccleaner or the inbuilt windows 'disk cleanup' tool & don't get too concerned.

if you need more space to install stuff, add a secondary larger but slower traditional HDD and use 'custom install' options and redirect it to the second drive. hybernation is not a good idea with a sdd system drive, turn hybernation off, delete the hyberfil and use 'sleep' instead.

Usually, there is a hibernation file and pagefile that can be done away with and/or adjusted to free up some space.
