External HDD data recovery - Chkdsk erased some data!!

I booted up my Win 7 computer today and ChkDsk said my Ex HDD may have been corrupted and proceeded to delete some files. Those were some very important files - how can I get them back? (Video and Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 files)

I prefer free methods on this - I know I can buy software to do this, but I currently don't have the money. Or a very cheap method, if nothing else.

It's ironic that today was the day I was going to back up this drive.

Please help!

That didn't work. I don't know if Win 7 does something different with the files, but I searched for .chk files there were a few for windows live mail and firefox, but nothing for the files I was looking for.

I downloaded Pandora Recovery, which locates deleted data, and it shoes the data has not been deleted?!, but the folder that my data is in isn't seen by windows explorer (and yes, I do have windows set to show hidden files and folders) so somehow windows erased the folder, but not the data in that folder - how do I get to my data?

(BTW - Pandora shows my data in a file called found.000, not the original folder I created, which is gone now, but from there everything else looks fine, but Pandora won't let me do anything with the files I see, because it "sees" them as NOT deleted)

Hi,

chkdsk has been a file wrecker ever since it was introduced.

Don't use it!

PM me, I'll help you get your files back.
And what ever you do, don't create or copy any files to that disk!

Leave it as it is for now.
Just hope chkdsk didn't overwrite any of the original sectors of the files.

Greetz

What is the recommended method to attempt to test for and fix a bad sector on the Drive. I recovered most of my data, but now I want to see if the drive is salvageable (I'll use it for back up purposes now)

You must have been lucky. :D

I've seen more 1kb .001 files than I can remember.

The thing I hate most about it is the lack of control.
With any other recovery tool like active@undelete, you have a ton of options to tell it what it should find, and what to do with it.
Especially the option to recover to another partition is something that is sorely missed in chkdsk.

I used Advanced File Recovery. I got back almost all of the pics with this program. But it isn't free. There is a trial version that will look for the deleted files. To retrieve them, you'll have to buy it, but you can at least see if it finds it or not (you can also preview them). I did that and saw most of the pics, and went ahead and paid for it.

Lost files after chkdsk
after running disk check on an external hard drive,Folder and files disappeared
Windows 7 Chkdsk searched my external hard drive for bad sector recovery, and it deleted hundreds of my most important folder and files.
unfortunately I have not any new backup from them.
The file system is NTFS.
How could I recover deleted file entries after windows chkdsk in NTFS partition with their path(or atleast their name), using information provided in generated log file?

plz help to find prob and get my files back .
