Norton 2009 products now work with windows 7!

Have you ever tried a trial reset?

I have tried it once or twice before I decided to go ahead and buy N2009.
Then I got that same symptom as you describe, even with the genuine product.
Norton had found out about it and sent an update that blocked my program when it detected the trial reset.

I had to run the trial reset again and disable it, to make it stop reseting.

Oh, and a quick format won't get rid of it either. It's in the root sector.

I dont remember, I know I had to download something because I DID have Norton 2009 BEFORE it worked with windows 7, I guess the trail had ran out even though I only had it installed for about 30 minutes.
Quick google search, and a boot into safe mode fixed this problem.

I guess Im back to ESET NOD32, After a reboot Norton started saying that My license ran out and that I had to buy it. I was like "WTF?" I still have 13 days left...

If you check a little further on VB Bulletin, you'll find that Symantec passed all previous tests since September 1999.
Not many can top that.

My point is that NOD32 does top that. No other av software has passed as many as NOD32 has.

Well, I have run my own software company and currently work for another software company...beta's don't change that much. Tweaks here and there, but the overall look and feel...nope.

While that may be, you cannot compare your company's (and the others) methods, to another, larger, well known (and hated) company. =|

You're right. Although missing two viruses in ten years of testing is hardly a reason not to buy Norton.
I did use NOD32 for 5 years and I liked it, but I had some issues with it, performance wise, and some little bugs that are still not solved, that..well .. bugged me.
And it did miss 7 viruses on my server that Norton did detect.

I hated Norton's products, because they made my system run notably slower.

But the 2009 suite is the fastest. A lot faster than Nod32.
I want an AV product to hardly be noticed.
Norton does that, and is among the best in detection, although it's not the best.

So I decided to go for usability and speed and sacrificed maybe 1% of safety for it.

Between the top 5 AV's I guess it's a matter of taste and preference.

I would never advise against NOD32, because it is an excellent product.

Has anyone noticed when you have ESET NOD32 and a your downloading a 50MB+ .EXE file in Firefox it freezes at 99% and firefox doesn't respond? When I had Norton this dident happen!

While that may be, you cannot compare your company's (and the others) methods, to another, larger, well known (and hated) company. =|

It's a "beta", not an "alpha". Beta releases rarely go through major changes. They have minor tweaks and fix bugs. They don't change the way the interface works or color schemes. I have been a beta tester for many a "large" company as well. In fact, my company was a million dollar software company, so it certainly wasn't "small". I speak from many years experience here.

The overall interface as well as the color scheme just does not appeal to me in the least. I prefer something much more professional looking.

I use FF and NOD32 and have never had that happen. In fact, I have never had a single issue with NOD32 in the 8 or so years that I have been using it.

That is your opinion and I respect that. My opinion is that most companies change a lot of things between a Beta and Final Release.

They say that bitdefender works with win7. but its not recommended. failed major tests.

I think you are both right and both wrong.

It differs per company.

MS is one of those companies that can drastically change their plans even in the later stages of Beta development.
Remember the differences between Longhorn and Vista?
They dropped quite a few significant features from first beta to end product.
Even the GUI changed quite a bit from Longhorn to Vista. (not to everyone's liking).

There are more examples of companies making some drastic changes to Beta's after reviewing user feedback.

I think with Win7, MS actually responded a lot to user feedback compared to previous OS's.

Hmm, just to see for myself I uninstalled Norton and installed "Eset Smart Security 4". Better known as Nod32.

Sad to see it's still the same resource hog it always was.
You can chose smart scan and advanced scan.
Turns out there's nothing smart about smartscan.

After 1 hour it was on 20% and according to the log, it had scanned 638mb of files. Most of them were in one folder.
Same as five years ago there were numerous files Nod still can't open and therefor ignores.

Norton does my whole C: drive in under 30 minutes.
And a next time, it will only scan changed files, and finishes in 9 or 10 minutes.
And you will hardly notice it's doing it's work, that's what I call smartscan.

Norton may have missed two "wilds" in the VB test, but it is a far more sophisticated product than the piece of junk Nod still is.

The only thing Eset seems to have updated since the last time I used it, are the virus definitions and they do that well, but for the rest it is a remnant of the early XP days.

I had high hopes after some positive comments here, but it was a big disappointment.

Not sure what is going on with your system, but I don't notice any lag at all during a full scan here. NONE. I actually can play Left4Dead while doing a full scan with no problems at all.

A "full" scan takes about 30 minutes, but I have a ton of files, folders and sub folders, and any anti virus takes about that on my system.

I really think it all depends on your system, because some here swear by Kaspersky and when I had it installed and running a full scan, my PC was running at 100% and I couldn't do anything.

I'm doing a full scan right now just for testing and ESS is maxing out at 25% CPU usage and 45K RAM.

Nothing wrong with the system, although it's not a formula 1 model.
1.8ghz pentium mobile, 1,5gb ram.

Installed Norton again and during scan, CPU is between 20% and 35%

Tomorrow I will do a second test of Eset on my HTPC which has a dual core and 8gb of ram.
I'll post back the results.
