I want to upgrade my motherboard to a 4 slot PCIE one and get two HD7950's or HD7970's. I already have two HD6770's crossifred. I want to know if I could run a pair of 7950's or 7970's crossfired as my main GPUs and use my old 6770's as extra GPUs (For dedicated bitcoin mining). When I'm not using the PC I want to run the 7950's or 7970's (not in crossfire mode) along with the two 6770's for bitcoin mining and maximize my hash rate outputs for bigger profits. Is this possible? Having two sets of different cards and having them detected properly.

If you are going with 7900 cards the 6700's wouldn't even be a factor here

You can't add 2 cards the same make and 2 other cards that aren't on that tier level you would confuse the hell out of the drivers or better yet crash it

sell the other 2 cards for a decent price there is no need to even update a board for 4 way because you would be wasting money

I don't want to have a 4-way crossfire with the different cards. The two 7xxx would be in crossfire and used for working/gaming/normal use. While the two 6xxx cards would be mining bitcoin (Not in crossfire setup). Then when I'm not using the 7xxx cards I would disable crossfire through catalyst and have them mine bitcoin along with the 6xxx cards for better hash rates.
I've seen post from other forums where people have different cards installed (not crossfired) and have them all working. Here's one from a litecoin forum - " Yes, as far as I know you can have as many different GPU's connected to your motherboard. If you have enough slots for it of course. I have seen people with 3 gpu's (2x 5850 1x 5750 or something), so I guess 4 will do as well.". I just want to confirm this.
Basically I want the two 7xxx cards crossfired (primary use cards) and the two 6xxx cards not crossfired (secondary cards, strictly bitcoin mining) on the same mobo and being detectable and usable by the mobo.

Here you go https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=6575.0

Above wasn't about 4 way CF i'm saying it is highly unlikely that combination would work

you can fill all your GPU slots but that doesn't mean they will play nice with each other

As mentioned in the article as well it only works with the same GPU's in crossfire using multi GPUs has to be in the same Tier level for them to work like that

I want a direct link to this article copy and pasting does no good here also if they were already using strong cards along with the low end cards pretty much the 6770's will stay idle and pretty much never be used

Plus1 to that. I would use the "KISS" principle and look to Crossfired 78 or 79 series only. As mentioned you are only headed towards major complex grief the other way....but I can't speak from having tried that only crossfired two cards several times! Each mobo, CPU, GPU (s), drivers will react uniquely but the first thing that enters my mind is why when the performance of lets say two 7970's will be crazy high.

I think people are getting confused about what I'm wanting. The only thing I want to use the 6xxx cards for are mining bitcoins. The 7xxx cards would be used for everyday use except for overnight I plan to use them for mining bitcoins also (not in crossfire setup). I want to do this so I can dedicate two cards to mine bitcoins 24/7 and be able to use my PC for work/gaming at the same time using the primary 7xxx cards in crossfire setup. Overnight when i sleep I plan on un-crossfiring the 7xxx cards to mine bitcoins with the 6xxx cards. So I need to confirm that I can crossfire two 7xxx cards for primary use and install two 6xxx cards that would be detected/used by the bitcoin mining app.

We fully understand what you are trying to do the problem is your not understanding us they simply don't work that way sure you can disable crossfire to the more powerful cards but still they will be shown as the dominate GPU

What you are looking for is programs that allows GPU trickery to make it work when it shouldn't work

Okay, if I don't use a crossfire setup it would work. Say I use one card for primary use then use the other three to mine. Would all be detected and would it allow me to do that?

Would this not be something better asked on the bitcoin forums? Unless someone here has done the same thing, the best any of us could tell is what we can find searching around.

It sounds like you'll be forced to constantly upgrade to have any hope of staying in the money. Also sounds like GPU's are old and done with !

OP, you trying to mine while playing high end games?

The issue is, PCIe usage with not identical cards is supposedly bad, you have cards that don't run at same speeds for one thing, and probably not the same voltages, either, major mobo/cpu strain if it even works, but very unstable conditions?

I'd get a 2nd rig just for BC mining given the choice and run it 24/7.

And then can it make enough to pay for it's power consumption?
