End of support - Office 2010

Looks like most of the support for Office 2010 will end in 2015 -- Ms is obviously pushing everybody towards The Cloud and subscription Office 365.

Office 2013 will be around a bit longer but I really don't like the interface.

Not great news, I like Office 2010. I suppose I'll use it until the bitter end and see what my options are from there as I really don't like the idea of cloud based stuff. I've no idea how 365 works.

No need to punch the panic button. That end of support date is for any improvements and bug fixes. Extended end of support, the date when M$ will cease to issue security updates is still 10/13/2020. One can safely continue to use Office 2010 until then.

I agree about Office 2013's interface. Even though I was happy with Office 2007, I bought 2010 to ensure I had an office program I liked through the end of Win 7. Had I waited until 2017, when Office 2007 reached its EOL, I probably would have been stuck with an abomination even worse than 2013's.

That's good to know -- by 2020 if I'm still around I will have long since retired by then so I won't be in the market for learning loads of new software.

IMO Office 2010 was Ms's best release ever -why they didn't build on the success of OFFICE 2010 for office 2013 and allow the user MORE choice in customising the interface so they don't need to wear "gangsta" type shades when using it I'll never know -- and it's still a moot point I suppose since they've gone over to Office 365 - a cloud and subscription model -- not a model I want anything to do with in any case.

Anyway by 2020 I'll probably still be running XP and Windows 7 as Virtual machines on some sort of Linux as Windows probably will have become totally unusable on any sort of "Non Biological" computing device by then.

LOL! Don't count on it. I've been retired four years now and I'm still learning new software and anticipate more.

We are SO on the same page here although Office 2007 wasn't any slouch. I initially rejected 2010 in favor of my 2007 I already had because M$'s marketing hyped features weren't of any use to me. Then I wound up getting it anyway (on sale, to boot!) so I wouldn't get stuck with an abomination worse than 2013 further down the road but before Win 7 breathes its last dying gasp. It turned out it has features that M$ never bothered to mention that alone would have made the upgrade worthwhile.

I have no idea what I'll be doing by 2020 although I've left XP behind already (no point in prolonging the agony when Win 7 is even better). For now, I'm taking a watch and wait stance for a few years before making any decisions (who knows, Ballsmer might come to his senses or be replaced by then and M$ will get off the phone and tablet one way track). I would like to stay current for compatibility reasons but sandboxing Win 7 and other apps might be an option as is switching to Linux. I could replace Office with something like Libre Office but it would be more work and require additional apps to do some of the things I can do now from within Office.

The one app that really has me worried is Adobe Acrobat. It's rumored that all Adobe apps are going to be subscription cloud based in the near future and I'm not going there (my future has dodgy and/or expensive internet access in it). Adding insult to injury, my ADF scanner depends on Acrobat for scanning directly to PDF and to searchable PDF in one step. I haven't found a replacement yet that can do all of what Acrobat can.
