Well, I heard of it some time ago (not this in particular, but advancements in crystal data storage), and I still maintain the view that anything not analogic is going to be a major pain in the backside to read without a working reading device. Go trying to read an old real floppy disk, not the 1.44 mb ones, the actually "floppy" 8-inch ones.

It's not just figuring out that the crystal thing has holes and they have a pattern, but understanding in what way the stuff was coded. That is, you need a reader AND a computer + softwares of the period to read the data.

I still applaud at the successor of the ROM media storage. Something that can be left in the car in a sunny day without degrading, and insensible to scratches and bumpy rides! The SSD of the CD-ROM!

Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic but I wanted to touch base with MileAhead on this...

Unfortunately with the jazz, the main reason is they don't think the CD will produce enough profit. Some of the overlooked albums are very high quality too. Sadly often times the ignored album is finally released on CD because the artist dies. That always seems to boost sales projections.

Give me an example of an album or albums you're looking for not on CD?

While it is true a lot of albums haven't made it, a lot of them are some of the more obscure ones in the overall scheme of things; meaning that while you and I may love a particular album, in the overall scheme of things it didn't do that well. As I said I collect, so I try to keep an eye out for these things.

Anyway more and more stuff is making it to CD; so what you couldn't find yesterday, you may find today. And as I said, Japan is a great place to start looking for hard to find CD's, so is Europe.

Well I've been looking for this on CD for a long time seeing that my album is scratched


Caldera's Sky Islands - a mixture of jazz/latin fusion.

As you can see it's a Japanese release, though I didn't have to look there. I found it at dustygroove.com (located in Illinois)

The point I was trying to make earlier is some of this stuff is out there (or will be), you just have to look, and keep looking.

I know many CDs came out in japanese only releases. At any rate, perhaps because of mp3, the searching around for CDs and even the concept of "albums" seems to be archaic. I tend to do things in cycles. Watch tennis incessantly, then abandon it for a couple years, watch other sports instead, then return. My enthusiasm for finding jazz CDs was supplanted by video/movies etc. esp. Sci/Fi and foreign films.

To make matters worse I have to forget about both movies and audio CDs/files for awhile since I had to abandon everything, including my computers, when I was evicted. All my stuff was thrown out like trash. I try not to think about it until I have a place to live. I haven't kept up with the new jazz coming out. Perhaps in a couple years I'll be back into it.

I know everyone has something going on in their life but I can only comment what's was put before me. Since you mentioned having a hard time finding CD's I commented on that.

Thanks for the kind words. Another roadblock for me following jazz was the demise of an FM radio station I found that played classical music during the day, and jazz 7 nights a week. The main jazz DJ had been broadcasting there for 30 years before they sold the station out from under him. At that time the "smooth jazz" thing was coming on. AFAIK the station is not broadcasting at all now. Seems like any online jazz I try to use goes unstable after about 5 minutes. It makes it tough to stay immersed in it.

It's too bad mp3 didn't come online earlier. It would be more cost effective I think to preserve jazz albums that aren't projected as "big sellers" to justify the cost of CD production. After all, online disk space is cheap.
