The problem with Asus is their hardware is sound but their software is poorly written so I wouldn't want any of it on there conflicting with Win7. Most OEM utlities duplicate better versions built into the OS, conflict and cause issues. Many are so deeply rooted that with all the other crapware they really require a lean, mean reinstall. It's mean because you won't let spyware have it's way with your startup.

Well, speaking from my personal experience, this Acer laptop had very little in the way of crapware or bloatware on it when purchased. But then, it is (was) a top-end model aimed at the professional/expert user, not the average content-consumer.

But yes, I did end up doing a clean install anyway.

That Acer may have been clean but the two Acer netbooks and the one Acer desktop I had were practically bursting at the seams with crapware.

Speaking of crapware I have to say my Asus Prime notebook with Windows 8 was relatively free of it. I think I wound up removing like two apps which also included MacAfee, which was replaced in favor of Norton Internet Security.

That was similar to my experience with my Asus netbook. As I recall, It wasn't as quite as clean as my current Lenovo but still one "heckuvalot" better than the Acers.

Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer is finally admitting what everyone has been thinking: Microsoft made a huge mistake with the Surface RT tablet.
Last week, the company disclosed that it lost over $900 million on the low-selling tablet computer, and during an internal Microsoft event this week, Ballmer put the disaster into simple, understated terms, The Verge and Neowin separately reported.
"We built a few more devices than we could sell," Ballmer reportedly said.
Despite some good reviews, Microsoft had an extraordinarily difficult time getting the Surface off of shelves, and an overwhelming number of Surface RT tablets have been left unsold. If you break down the $900 million Microsoft lost on the Surface RT, it comes out to about 6 million unsold devices.
Still, Microsoft is working on the next generation of the tablet, and internal response to the new device has been positive at Microsoft, Neowin reports.
It's not just the Surface that has been letting the company down; Microsoft is not selling enough Windows products in general. But Microsoft does have one bright spot: Windows Phone 8 is beating BlackBerry for the coveted No. 3 spot in the smartphone market.

I'm not gonna lie. Windows 8 should be aimed more towards tablets and not as an actual desktop OS. Microsoft has been doing a lot of messed up stuff after their release.

Now you are catching on! Win 8 was never intended to be a "desktop" OS to begin with. MS wanted something besides RT however that could be installed to any tablet other then their new Surface line that looked and felt the same as the RT. You just happen to be able to run it on a desktop or laptop while MS "Forgot"? to mention it's wrapped around tablet and why so much was stripped out of Windows to accomidate the tablet/phone arena.

Right, it is a mess. This dual user interface is like herring with plum pudding. Tastes terrible.

If you ever catch an MS tv spot you will fast notice they only show 8 on a tablet! They just made it so it could be run on desktops and laptops in order to be available for program developers mainly who wouldn't be working on a tablet but likely full screen desktop.

Now this is how the MS Misinformation got so many hooked on 8 by allowing them to think it was the latest "desktop release when it never was! MS simply had to have something available for the pc companies to slap on their new machines you could still point and click with. MS simply threw in some of the usual desktop version's(Vista/7) options like the system image creator as well as scheduled backup to make it "bearable" on desktop while tablets often lack drive space where the backup options can work well there too.

I'm reasonably sure that the current tablet had a "positive internal response".

As we all know, it is Microsoft's own fault that they can't sell W8.

If they had just done as testers had suggested (during the previews) they wouldn't be in this position.
They still refuse to do it with W8.1, despite the awful sales of W8.

I guess MS likes going 2nd in "Rochambeau" (Roshambo?) contests.

This is another indication that MS can't (or refuse to) build a proper installer for their OS.
If they could, they could have given a GUI option during the install (automatic device detection or manual selection).

That's precisely what they wanted to avoid having two separate entities to push the one at everybody rather then seeing a separate desktop edition which would also lead to a totally "different look" since some knothead at MS wanted everything looking exactly the same across the board(room maybe) regardless of the specific needs for each platform by itself.

Reality Check Time MS! You wanted to see hindsight implemented as foresight and now realizing where this has all lead! In the real world people and companies alike the actual customers have certain expectations regardless of a few new "bells & whistles" that get tossed in from time to time not to see the desktop equation being phazed out just for the momentary go at Fruit Co. and Google-otrostophy.

The Fruit Company has been noted as being one of the exceptionally few companies to see a rapid profit increase on a steady climb in the last few years while everyone else was doing the sweating it out part! One main thing to take note of here is "Consistency"! Between ME flopping around, XP a rush job to replace ME, Vista being not well received with MS understating the actual minimum requirements so OEMs could push it on their under rate hardwares at times, and now 8 falls through you have to look at how you would have thought MS finally learned the success lesson from 7 and followed suit to keep it going?! NADA...... "dddaaaaaaa... we can't do that type of thing can we now? ddaaaaa...." :huh:

Actually, there are people who like Win 8 as is so it wouldn't be right to just get rid of what it has. I agree that Win 7 needs an SP2 but I would worry about letting M$ decide what to move from Win 8 to Win 7, considering their recent track record of bad decisions.

Did M$ actually test the new Gui with there own people(staff) to see a reaction?
If so, What was the reaction and/or what segment did they test.
If they tested with the actual staff, that did some real work ie secretaries etc and asked how Win8 was for a desktop OS.
Sounds like they didn't listen or understand or incorrect segment. (or the staff were too scared to give an honest answer"

As for the Tablet....
Too expensive, very competitive market, world economy"market segment" is still not good.

As for the marketing????? well I'm still tired from watching the kids jumping around everywhere,,,,,,,,, And this explains anything..?

Also with the Tablet.. M$ alienated all the OEM's (pc makers).

As for business users??? how much would it cost them to retrain all staff, IT support, etc???? Plus the expense of the OS, for a new gui.

You are right Lady. They should keep Windows 8 around for those that do like it. Choice I think is what we all want.

People like 8 due to it seeing a faster boot and being new without fully realizing it is based mainly for tablet and why things were not included like Media Center and dvd codecs since you wouldn't use them on tablet as a general rule. You can still plug in a usb optical drive but likely wouldn't be found lugging that around as well.

For seeing it put on desktops that's precisely where MS faltered completely at not providing "desktop options" rather then click and point on tiles which most agree look a bit too much of a sad story! MS simply didn't think ahead of seeing two forms of 8 come out being too focused on their new Surface models and the second form of RT(8) you can install on other non MS tablets.

And yes it wouldn't hurt any to see an actual SP2 for 7 while that isn't so likely to be happening.

I know Ballmer knows how to read. It's been no secret since the CP that nobody wants their desktop to look like an Iphone. It's a lot more than just a start button. He still doesn't get it. It must be nice to walk around thinking you are smarter than everyone else.
