Solved Buying a Seagate SSHD for my laptop?

An SSD is THE biggest upgrade you can make to a computer in terms of performance.......that is the truth. If you buy crap SSD's, don't expect them to last. For around $100 you can get a 128GB SSD that will blow your mind. This thread makes my head hurt. Good luck

Hdd will do everything that an ssd does with out the price tag if you look properly you will find one slightly faster or slightly slower

He can but does he need applacations to run that quicker than a normal hdd let the op deside

No decent SSD will be slower than a hard drive. You all need to brush up on SSD's vs hdd's. If he is looking at a hybrid SSD/HDD, he obviously wants better performance. Not even the fastest 10k RPM will compare to an SSD.

I believe I will go for the Seagate drive.
The Samsung drive provides too little space and it's more expensive. And, as the computer mostly runs browser and Office applications, it doesn't need to read lots of information either.

Ok, you had one SDD fail, one with a Sandforce controller. Big deal! So that makes you an expert on SSDs? HDDs also fail. Almost anything can fail; that's why they have warranties. Check the reviews on Newegg for Samsung's 840s and 840 Pros; they are much better than reviews for any HDD. Frankly, the number of people who recommend SSDs far, far outnumber you.

Well, my crappy HDD definitely failed. That's why I'm getting a new one!

EDIT: Anyways BigTabs is saying my needs don't require a SSD. I don't know about you but I agree with him.

I have no idea how someone can post how some hard drives are faster than a ssd. Thats bull bananas. The slowest SSD's will run circles around any hard drive on the market.
Failure rate tests change from site testing to site testing.
I have seen nothing in the last year or so on various sites that would indicate SSD's failure rate is any worse than a hard drive. My SSD is around 2 years old and it still test at 100%. Intel warranties it for 5 years. Prices have dropped big time in the last year on most SSD's making $ to GB more reasonable. The days of all the scarry stories about SSD's is long gone.
I can't tell you how much to spend because your money and how you spend it is your business not mine.
For myself I wish Intel would lower their prices so I could get about a 500 GB, which I don't need but want.
The recommendation I will give is buy the biggest one you are willing to spend the money on and nothing under a 120 GB.
Many good suggestion on brands have been posted. Do some home work on your own and pick one.

If you read my post correctly I have owed 4 and I did not say I was an expert your adding that

Cheap ssd don't last long exspensive ssd do

Cheap ssd have been know to be slower than some hdd

I could not see the op spending £150-£200 on a exspensive ssd as its not his main computer

Lets put it all straight before people think I'm a know it all and for the people how read half a post baby steps here me go

1. Expensive SSD. "Last longer" "faster than an HDD" great for applications" read and write is faster
2. Cheap SSD. "Does not last longer in terms of quality" Faster/slower than a hdd in some cases which I said in the post" read and write can be slower than a hdd

Please don't make me carry on I mean you you buy a car for $300-£300 an think its quality cuz if you do I think you should re educate yourself

What the OP spends is not my business. I really don't care if it's their main computer or not. That also is not my business.
I thought I gave a good attempt to explaining the quality, speed of a SSD and the lower prices now days make it a outstanding upgrade.
I know of know single piece of hardware the will improve the speed of a computer than a SSD.

Frankly, I wouldn't go by what BigTabs says; he has proven he isn't up to speed on the current state of the art of SSDs. Make up your own mind.

Where an SSD shines is in decreased boot time, faster program starts, and faster data access but they don't make the computer itself run faster. A program will load faster but, once loaded, it won't run faster. For just data storage only, SSDs are overpriced. Normally, the ideal arrangement is to use an SSD for the OS and programs and a HDD for data storage. However, only the larger, more expensive laptops have a place for two drives. So, to get the performance of an SSD and room for storage when only one drive can be installed, one has to install a large SSD. Obviously, the larger the SSD, the more it will cost. One has to decide if the increased performance an SSD can give is worth the cost.

SSHDs are a compromise, both in performance and in cost. They work by using what is essentially using a small, built in SSD to cache the most frequently used programs and the OS to improve program start times and boot times. In the case of the SSHD you are considering, the SSD portion is 8GB so there is a limit to how much improvement it can make. Still, it will perform better than a HDD.

I wanted more performance from the 500GB HDD in my Lenovo notebook but still needed the storage capacity. A good 512GB SSD would have cost me $110 USD more than the notebook did and I couldn't justify that expense so I got the SSHD you are considering and I've already posted how I feel about it. In the case of my desktop (a $4k+ machine), I had no trouble justifying the cost of a 128GB SSD (Samsung 840 Pro).

I read your post and know what you said. Reread what I said. Your information about SSDs is way out of date.

No SSD will perform worse than a HDD, unless it's in the process of failing. That's just not how they work. An SSD is suitable for anybody that turns a computer on and uses it. It is the single best upgrade one can do. CPU/RAM/GPU.......none of those upgrades come close to what an SSD will do for you. And you don't have to get a really high dollar one these days for it to be a good performer with good reliability. Do some homework and read up on things, you are about 3 generations behind.

I changed my mind and I'm going for the 120GB Samsung 840 instead.
The 1st-gen Momentus XT has had some really nasty issues; I don't want that to happen in my computer.
