Solved Can files be properly erased from a drive?

I guess it's a specialized field. But when i read reports of recovering all this data I wonder, where is it stored? I mean, can I have 500 GB of data on a 100 GB drive? Great compression I must say. heh heh

Of course the best way to safeguard sensitive data is to take a big hammer and smash the device to bits then burn it!
Certainly with HDDs someone could use very specialized devices to slightly move heads to pick up residual magnetic fields. Also encryption can be broken. However, for the normal person I wouldn't think this was a worry.

My only worry with this is in the small print --it complies with the USA's Defense dept standards -- now to my suspicious (non USA) mind it might imply that there is still a back door for people like the NSA to get access to the data even after you've used this type of utility - but for ordinary commercial cases it's probably the next best thing to physically destroying the drive. It's certainly "FBI proof" even if the NSA might be able to glean some data from your disk.

Yes I guess it does. It certainly rules me out but not say security agencies who invest in the equipment. These people could poke around my drives and bore themselves sh**less.
