I'm actually building one of those for a Christmas gift for my ball and chain. I may add the motor kit so it runs on the track you can add to it. The B&C is into trains as much as I am. I have a big G scale setup and dozens of loco's.

I'll use some of my G scale parts to detail the outside appearance, make it look like this one out in the yard.

I saw a scale model of an actual gear driven locomotive similar to the one you pictured at a museum up in Flagstaff a few years ago. It worked at one time:

There are G scale kits for building a real steam powered loco. Designed to run off butane, some on white gas, a few guys actually make a coal boiler and run them, training the mouse to shovel coal is the hardest part.

The model in my pic is a gear driver, it was designed for logging ops on step grades, very low speeds but a real work horse.

Same for the one in my pic. The model also ran on steam (when it was still running) but I forget what the boiler was fired on. The original was designed for logging although not in the Flagstaff area. Those were mostly Baldwins; one is on display by where the tracks run south of downtown Flagstaff and the another is on display in front of the museum where the model is kept (oddly enough, the museum is the old county hospital).
