Microsoft KB2859537 Update Causes BSOD on Windows 7

As we’ve reported to you this morning, one of the critical updates released by Microsoft on Patch Tuesday causes more harm than good on some computers, so the company decided to pull the patch completely.

Now it appears that another update, this time KB2859537, is causing lots of problems on Windows 7 computers, with some users claiming that in most cases, installing the fix leads to lots of unexpected BSODs.

“When I install KB2859537 on my Windows 7 X64 machine I get a BSOD during reboot either trying to boot normally or trying to boot in safe mode. Had to restore the primary disk three times now to get the PC back,” one user reported on Microsoft Community.

I got a BSOD when it tried to install the bunch of updates, rebooted, got up to a point then said "failed update, reverting changes". Then I reinstalled the updates that failed and everything was fine.

I suspect something like this was the &%&$£& thing that screwed up my netbook's Starter some time ago (of course not this in particular as it's for x64).

I haven't downloaded and installed any updates yet (I never do until after I run my antimalware scans and make a new image of the boot drive on the following Saturday) so I just now took a fresh look and KB2859537 has NOT been pulled. However, it is unchecked. Based on what Boba just posted, I suspect that all the other updates may have to be installed before KB2859537 is.

I loaded all available Important updates the day they were issued,
I haven't seen any issues on either of my machines 64 or 32 bit ?
Although I don't use the 32 bit system much.

MS has not pulled KB2859537. They pulled two other updates for Servers but are looking into this problem.

I installed the updates on three Windows 7 laptops (all 64-bit, each varying between Ultimate, Professional, and Home Premium) on Tuesday, and haven't experienced a BSOD on them yet.

I installed all but KB2859537 this morning, then, after the obligatory restart, I installed KB2859537 and restarted. so far, nothing has blown up. Whether the order of installation has anything to do with it or not I can't be sure but, if anyone has a problem, it couldn't hurt to try what I did.

I got all my updates the day they came out. Installing a few at a time and rebooting. The only thing I have noticed is the boot/restart times are longer.
I won't spend any time trying to figure that out because by the time I did figure it out Microsoft will have a update out to fix it.

Looks not so bad unless you are x32bits based,

Got one BSOD quickly discussed here and then nothing since in the events viewer.

I have two 32 bit Vista machines and one 64 bit W7 machine. None of them are experiencing problems.

However, I found a few glitches with IE10 six months ago and uninstalled it. I use IE9 and Chrome on all three systems.

....if only the everyday computer user would read stories like yours! They would get a second Internal HDD or External HDD and make a system image at least once a week. I make one each time I install something new or before a large number of Windows Updates. I make a backup of all my User Files just about everyday.

Can you hear us out there!? Always, always backup your files and make a system image!

I checked and installed the unchecked update without issue, thinking to myself that it was kind of weird that a recommended update wasn't checked by default (why I remember). Oh well, at least I wasn't one of the update casualties.

Kind of weird that they would still include it while knowing it was buggy.

And yeah, I do have system image backups just in case.

All I saw Tuesday is a 9.4 mg update for MSE ?
Who knows one day the sitting and waiting kb will disappear from your list of updates.

What version of Windows 8? I have Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and did not get that update.

Sure glad I came across this thread. Twice in the last week my wife’s x64 Windows 7 system crashed and would not reboot. Windows Update had created a System Restore Point prior to installing a critical update but reverting to it did not help. The best image I had was almost two months old. Because there was a data partition on the same drive as the system partition, I restored with the “Reformat and Repartition” box unchecked. That failed to work either and now I was getting worried!

Finally restored to a new drive with the reformat and repartition box checked, and I was relieved to see that got the system running again. After copying the saved data partition to the new drive, we were in business… for about 24 hrs.

Next day, same problem! I had neglected to turn Windows Update off and it did its ugly deed again that night.

I think we are ok now, but having to restore with Reformatting and Repartitioning enabled seems more severe than others have reported here. Wouldn’t that mean that there was a boot record problem, which then might sound like more of a virus than an update issue? Does anyone have advice for me on that? I’m running MSE here and it thinks things are ok.

As it stands now, the system has been running ok for almost 48 hours, Windows Update is set to download but don’t install, and I manually installed all pending updates except KB2859537 about 4 hrs ago.

Weren't there some Windows Updates that are excluded when you go check for updates?

I don't think KB2859537 was initially unchecked, but then later it was. Think I got to it too early.
