I don't understand how you can lose applications or files. I type exactly what I'm looking for, and I get it.

That's the same thing that pisses me off in Ubuntu and its dash screen.
Hell, if I need to know and remeber the name of all the programs I have installed I might as well pull them up by command line and bypass all this GUI bs. DOS (and linux terminal) all the way, you hipster kiddies!

Having my programs listed somewhere, with also icons, (because in case you missed it, the bulk of the human population remembers more easily images than words) is useful to me and many others.

I know that 8 can have the folders in the task bar and all that, and that there is an ugly app selector screen, but it's missing the point on so many levels.

It has to run out of the box, or it goes out of the window.

But in reality, I don't see why people are so Anti-Windows 8. I've said it once, and I'll say it again, IF you do not like change, DON'T UPGRADE.

Which is what is happening. W8 stuff is selling less than Vista stuff at its glory days. This ought to tell something. I mean pre-SP1 Vista sucked hard.

You are a minority. Is that a problem?

I love the look of Aero (I really dislike 8's pastelly colours) and with the new system I have everything is very snappy due to the SSD. 7 was a bit slow on my old rig but that was nearly six years old when I installed it, now it's more than fast enough for me. If Windows 8 would be faster on my system I wouldn't appreciate it and it wouldn't give me my Aero!

I'm just one of those who doesn't think 8 is for me, I'm very happy with 7 and will stick with it for a long while yet. I've being toying with running 8 in a VM for a closer look but it really is just curiosity and no real desire to move to it as my primary OS.

No probs mate I just adjust the colours with the colour calibration> I do have a SanDisk Extreme SSD in this machine and my power up to desktop takes about 8 secs including login if I am ready for it LOL!! Shut down is in the blink of an eye - seriously almost as soon as I hit the shut down button.
Between apps is just as quick and I use 7 forum through it all the time as you might have guessed.

It seems Windows 7 is here to stay, wherever Microsoft want Windows 7 to stay or not, Windows 8's UI has become too touchscreen orientated, and I've even struggled to find files and programs Windows 8 due to the metro Start Menu.

I don't understand how you can lose applications or files. I type exactly what I'm looking for, and I get it. I'm a bit of a naming freak, and have everything listed as what they really are. I've got nearly 20million files on my Network Drives, and my current computer has 4TB (80% Full), and I have no issues with finding programs. Compatibility is another issue, for another thread.


But in reality, I don't see why people are so Anti-Windows 8. I've said it once, and I'll say it again, IF you do not like change, DON'T UPGRADE. I'm not trying to rag on you, or be-little you, I'm just saying I don't understand it. Windows 8 was like a godsend to me, I'm tired of the same old look of Windows. Windows 98 - 7 have the same style. Windows 8 was new, and different, I enjoy the challenge it gives. I guess not everyone likes puzzles as much as I do

Anti 8 on tablet NO! Anti 8 on desktop? Take a look at just what 8 is a run off of RT on Surface Tablets that allows you to install on a tablet lacking 8 or the RT gui(both RT and 8 see same). Strip out the features and support people are accustomed on the desktop platform and offer no options to the user and you wonder why people want to stay with 7.

You can't compare the look between all versions leading up to 7 going back to Legacy. The two things that have remained until 8 came along however are IE and WMP. WMP was an option for 95 back then. At least back then if you looked on a 98 disk what did you find? "OPTIONAL" Windows components! Do you see any setup options for 8? NADA!

As anyone can readily see 8 draws a lot of fire from the obvious discontentment by many. That won't be going away anytime soon.

It seems to always come up that some people think other people don't like Windows 8 because they don't like change.

I like change for the better, but I don't like Windows 8, because in my opinion it is a change for the worse.

Bottom line is: use whatever you like. I won't belittle people that use and like Windows 8 (good for you guys), and I should hope for the same treatment.

I have a very specific kind of setup on my desktop (which includes how I have my Start menu setup) that works well for me. The additional Start screen related stuff would only serve to get in the way of that. Fortunately, there's no real significant reason for me to need to update to Windows 8. I also don't want to support this kind of an OS interface direction Microsoft is going in.

And as I've mentioned before, I use Windows 7 just fine on my Nexus 7 tablet too. Piece of cake.

Many of us were so horrified by Vista we leapt for Win7 to see if they'd learned. They had. As those of us who grew up with it here found it is by far the best OS ever, maybe destined to stay that way.

When and if it has a worthy successor we will embrace it and provide the level of support which has earned these forums the undisputed top tech forums on the web probably in history. Win7 is that good. Give us something that is as good or better.

If it ran what I run using Windows 7 10x faster I would update with blatant disregard for my GUI preferences, even if it was ugly and annoying as sin. LOL

Dread we've said it before and we'll say it again, we do not dislike change, we dislike change for the worse.

Taking a perfectly good desktop OS and perverting it to look and work like a tablet/phone OS is a change for the worse, which is not an upgrade, it's a downgrade.
The fact that most businesses have rejected W8 in favor of W7 should tell you something.

The UI is not only ugly, but was clearly designed and optimized for touchscreen use, which is anti desktop by nature. How many people want to smear up their 22-26 inch monitor screens with greasy grimy fingerprints, while tiring their shoulders by wiping and swiping with their arms up in the air?

If you're into tablets and phones, W8 is probably a change for the better.
If you're into desktops, W8 is a change for the worse.

A lot of people don't consider a "fresh coat of paint" and a random shuffling of features, files and tools to be an improvement.

Metro's a change, but it's NOT an improvement.

Unity is awful (at least you don't have to leave the desktop if the item you want is on the bar though).

Unity is why I swapped from Ubuntu 10 to Linux Mint 14 MATE.

The machine is a three nearly four year old Toshiba L550 Satellite Pro with an i5 430 @2.27GHz 8GB 1333 and a SanDisk Extreme SSD.
I have no explanation as to why it runs as fast as it just does and also why the Sandy Bridge runs faster but not as fast as this machine.
I am not saying 8 is better than 7 in fact I do most of my posting in 7 just that the machine runs faster and I can access both forums as normal
Now I think I mentioned somewhere if not in this thread there are a few things that are niggling like the msconfig for the Optimisation it no longer has that nice Startup tab settings it uses a set up called in through the Task manager which I find tedious and frankly convoluted and the back up in control panel is now File History - mind you I think it updates the backup on the USB stick from time to time - auto but I stand to be corrected.
But truly all in all I really don't know what the problem is all I can say if you don't like it then don't sit there and grizzle about it no one is forcing anyone to use it eh? - or are they??

Now to give you exact figures the 7 on the same set up ran power to desktop in 40-42 secs (including login) and shut down around 32 secs if I remember right. The 8 and don't forget it has all my 7 settings carried across not just the 8 gets to desktop in 8-9 secs including login - one has to sit there ready to quickly type course and the shut down is just about instantaneous and that is sometimes with the email pulled up and perhaps several tabs still open.
Ten times faster perhaps I was using a bit of poetic licence but I think you can see from the figures it seems that way

There is no one that can objectively use it and deny it was designed for a Phone and Tablet then ported to a desktop. That never has not and never will work. The devices are used for different purposes and need different Operating Systems. No matter what Steve Ballmer thinks, this is not a one size fits all world. Windows 8 is not a productivity system. Yes, I can do most of the same things with 8 I can do with 7, it just takes longer and is more difficult. I further resent Microsoft trying to tie everything you do to the Windows Live system and Skydrive. And just for another thought, why would they have some laptop manufacturers make it so that you can't go back to 7 or any other OS? Might it be that they knew it was not going to be well received and were trying to force everyone they could to continue using it? I'm not too sure about others, but I will not be forced to use any OS, or Skydrive either, and I resent the heck out of them for trying it. Windows 8 is not an improvement over 7. It is a tablet OS ported to the desktop environment, and will never work well as such. Apple would be proud.

Essenbe I totally agree, especially with the highlighted statement. For a desktop, W8 is clearly an inferior product and like you, I will not be force fed M$'s "one size fits all" compromised OS.
And like you, I also resent M$'s "Our way or the highway" attitude about W8.

If it comes down to "their way or the highway," I'll take the "highway".
Meantime I'll stay with W7 till M$ comes to their senses.
