This happens several times a day, most of the times the PC resets, sometimes it freezes with looping sound or I get a BSOD, lately after logging on to win 7 after a BSOD it sometimes says PCI express stopped working.

Things that usually lead to this problem: torrenting (utorrent or torch) will reset after a random time, when I leave it on over night it always resets, I have to use safe mode when torrenting, and even then albeit rarely I have witnessed some resets.

Trying to play Dota 2 (always resets on title screen), does happen in other games like League of Legends (once per match usually), Diablo 3 and Wow (once or twice a day).

Sometimes it will happen as soon as I login to win 7, or while browsing.

I have taken the PC to the store where I bought it to get it fixed and twice they said they tested everything and found nothing wrong with it.

I am guessing it has something to do with the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450.

If you change it to another port, does it do the same thing?

Then we need to find alternative ways to troubleshoot.

The display driver, the latest version is known to be buggy. Install the 314.22 WHQL only.

  • Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features
    • 3D Vision Control Driver
    • 3D Vision Driver
    • Graphics Driver
    • HD Audio Driver
    • PhysX
(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
  • Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
  • Boot normally now. Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, Download 314.22 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

Also let us know the wattage of the PSU.

Are you overclocking? As you are getting BSODs, you should stop overclocking and run all the hardware components like CPU, GPU and RAM to their default settings. Also set the BIOS to default, too.

my PSU is 500 w.

No overclocking.

Going to test the rest of the stuff now.

I was actually using the Nvidia sound driver, so I'm going to have to install it again.

Installed new BIOS and uploaded speccy ss, pc was on since yesterday but I was only torrenting and browsing, should I send another after 2 hours of gaming?

I did the stress test with fullscreen 1920 x 1200 2x AA, didn't see any artifacts, after a few minutes the temperature leveled out at 78o C so I stopped the test.

I did everything you listed.

Just now in the middle of a League of Legends match the PC turned off and the system alarm started beeping, when this happened a few times a month ago, I reconnected the ram and GPU cables, but this time I just turned it off and on again.

Here is the info we need.

View attachment 283170

Its hot. Hot beyond the critical level. So it may cause the issue that you are facing. We need to try to reduce the temperature there.

Dismantle the computer. Clean the inside, carefully. Clean everything including all the fan grills and air vents so that it can blow the hot air out easily. When re-seating, apply new thermal paste to the CPU.

When all is done, let us see another speccy screenshot; and let us know if the issue is continuing or not.

Also, the PSU is not enough for your case IMHO. I would suggest you to get a bigger one, say 650 watts at least.

I'm going to take it to the shop to get a new 650 w PSU and clean/change the thermal paste, I'll post the ss then, probably going to take about 2 weeks to get it back.

Just got my pc back, got a 750w PSU and had it cleaned and replaced the thermal paste, CPU temperature is still over 70o C while browsing within a few minutes of turning it on. The screenshot is from 30 mins of regular use.

Update: after 1 hour of use it turned off and started beeping...last temperature I saw was 96o C.

What should I do now?

In my best guess, the CPU is not seated properly. Call them again to whom you send the computer. 96 degrees is abnormally high.

Based on your temps reported your CPU's life span will be shortened drastically. May I ask, how big is the case?

Also, what is the CPU utilisation while receiving high temps? If idle then you may have a problem regarding the thermal paste applied. I would strongly recommend considering reapplying it. Also, your CPU fan may be a potential cause for the increased temps as well. Are you using the stock fan? I would more likely suspect the CPU fan if the increased temps are caused while under load meaning that you have poor cooling throughout the system.

Josh :)

Size: +-15 inches high, "regular" depth and width I guess.

It is a stock fan, the pc will reach over 96o C within 1 hour of browsing, within 5 minutes it's already 70-80o C. I turned on an option in the BIOS so the fan is always as fast as it can be, but didn't really change much.

The guys at the shop said they replaced the thermal paste 2 days ago, I checked it before and after, the paste spread looks pretty much the same, can't really tell if it's changed or not.

Inside the case there are the following fans: cpu, gpu and psu, should I get another 1 just for the case?

Did you remove the fan to check the paste? Removing the CPU fan will almost always break the thermal paste seal. If you did then this is your issue and you will need to re-apply thermal paste again.

Josh is correct if you take off the CPU cooler the old thermal paste has to be removed from both the cooler and CPU and new applied.
Note too the stock Intel cooler only good use is as a paper weight. If there is a place for one, a rear exhaust fan would be in order but getting a better cooler is more important.

I did remove the fan, but only after I confirmed it was still overheating after getting it back from the shop. I find it strange that the cpu is overheating to the point that the pc will turn off, since the only thing I had changed since I got it was the gpu, and the gpu doesnt overheat.

Either way you are still going to have to replace the thermal paste since you removed the CPU fan :(
