A new report claims that Google is working on a plan to replace third party cookies to track browsing activity, in favor of an anonymous identifier that could give users more privacy controls.

To be perfectly honest, I read it like this:
"that could give users Scroogle more privacy controls."

Yea I would agree ;)
Google is only attempting to squeeze out others from tracking not themselves.
And or give Users a false sense of anonymity to use Chrome or Android devices/ Sell-Sell-Sell.
Tracking an i.p. address is still tracking.

There is so such thing as privacy on the internet. No company is worse then another. When it comes to privacy, you have none. I find it hilarious that people use the term scroogled and M$ sometimes. Do I use their products? Yup. From all the big players. Why? Because I know that in the end, I can choose to ether have total privacy and be off the internet, or use their free services and have ads and other stuff targeted at me. I'm not totally fine with the ads and "tracking". Not at all. But I like the free services, I have read their so called privacy policies and I accept them for what it is. Your awesome for reading this.
You speak as though every company has the exact same practices, which of course can't possibly be true. That's exactly why I say Scroogle and not Scroogle... Google, sorry, force of habbit xD

You find it hilarious today, but if more people realized what those companies were doing and made a strong effort to stop it, perhaps things would've been different today.

You find it hilarious today, but if more people realized what those companies were doing and made a strong effort to stop it, perhaps things would've been different today.

People realize in the USA what the NSA is doing, but did anyone care? Nope, and yes. (Some did) There were some protests and stuff like that, but its not going to change anything. The average person doesn't care/understand. It doesn't matter what they vote for, what they try to do, because even if its everyone nothing will change. Someone else will take over and its the same stuff all over again.
The government and businesses won't change. Or they will claim they did, but just hide what they are doing again. Same with businesses. Just because businesses have a better privacy policy does not mean they follow it.
And yes, all companies have the same principle. They make money anyway they can. It's not about you, its about them. This is why you really don't "own" anything anymore. Everything is licensed. Starting with vista, you have a licence to use windows. In no way shape or form do you own the product. Its an agreement between you and Microsoft that you can use their product. Same with every software and anything else out there right now. Companies are essentially all the same when it comes to privacy.
Your the product. And it will stay that way, regardless of what service or company you use.

I only now saw that I missed to write a crucial point in my last post, so let me repeat it (even though I kind of agree with you):

if more people realized what those companies were doing BACK IN THE 80s or 90s and made a strong effort to stop it, perhaps things would've been different today

Hi there
I'm virtually IMMUNE to any form of advertising - I generally totally ignore it - and even if I'm watching LIVE TV (apart from Sport an increasingly rare occurrence for me these days --modern TV is just so much JUNK and reality shows) - during the commercial breaks I'm usually reading the ONLINE version of the Financial Times or other Newspapers on my smart phone or messing around with email etc so I don't care what google look at for my browsing habits.

In any case I'm sure these types of searches won't help any market research people. Screen shot below. (Actually it's the Icelandic Forestry commission --there are a SMALL number of trees - but it's a bit like the equivalent of "The Dutch Mountain Rescue Team" !!).

(just off to watch Man utd v Man city in local pub now -- C'mon Utd !!!).

Cheers
jimbo

Some truisms.
1. If companies couldn't make money with programs, operating system ect. their wouldn't be such things.
2. If companies couldn't make money on the internet their wouldn't be a internet.
3. If companies couldn't make money with browsers their wouldn't be browsers.
4. If ISP couldn't make money providing internet access their would be no access.
------------
Companies must and should make money. Do I agree on some methods they use NO?
The masses of people that use such things as I have listed above don't know what is going on and don't care. Most of them don't know if they have any security programs on their computing devices and don't care.

I remember when this happened. Many of the people I met went through (real) withdraws and depression. Then didn't care about legal or infections, spying or any thing else except Lime Wire for music.
They didn't care they were also being spied on while getting their music.
How could they possibly live without it.
I'm not joking!

Hi there
These sort of things are always a total joke -- there's a HUGE difference in obtaining any Court order and getting it enforced anyway - especially when the order is set by some of these "Kangaroo Courts" (no offence to any Aussies here) with their Lickspittle Judges who usually sit on the boards of Companies wanting these injunctions.

They've been trying to shut THIS site down for Years -- still going strong !!!. (Screenshot enc) - and still loads of others like it.

Cheers

Well, they've tried and failed. But that isn't the point, the point is they aren't going after the sites that host the information. They're going after the companies that ALLOW the hosting. My personal/family server was shut down because of the content it hosted.

I would scan the documents, but I'm not at home anymore. My site required credentials to login, and view the contents. How did I get busted? My ISP noticed my bandwidth usage went from the usual 750GB - 1Tb a month to nearly 5TB a month. Companies don't need your permission to view your bandwidth usage or scan your packets, you freaking agree to that when you sign up.

Let me try to explain my post #9

It's not about the court system in any country or the E.U. It's not about whether it is legal or not. Part of that post was intended to show my belief of how the masses of people think.

They don't care whether they are being spied on or if their is some sort of special cookie being left on their computer to track everything they do on line. The last thing they worry about is whether it is legal or not.

The article that Gornot posted will probably never be read by the masses. If by chance they stumbled into the information in the article they wouldn't care.
All they care about is getting their free music/movies/programs/ect.
If they get tracked or spied on they don't care and don't want to hear about it.
I understand when one illegal site is shut down others will pop up. The masses will find those illegal sites and their world will be right again.
They don't care if a browser, download site or their grandmother tracks them or infects their computer as long as they can get their free (not free) stuff.
I don't know how to help people that don't care.
I hope this explains my thoughts a little better.

Very true. A lot of the people I've met in my journey through the tech world, don't care.

I see illegal downloading like I see the Credit system in America/World. It's a bad thing if you AREN'T careful. I don't want to speak for others, but I'm paranoid when it comes to downloading. I, as an avid downloader of movie, music, and tv-shows, am appalled at how irresponsible the average user is. I'm one of those people, who downloads the current season, movie or album, but when available, I do purchase a hardcopy of it.

And yes, Layback Bear, it did explain it better. I was frustrated yesterday, I had to do a grammar packet that had no relevance to Cisco Networking. But I agree, and stand by what you said.
