No network access for Xbox 360 (Failed IP Address)

Hey there.
I've encountered a problem when connecting my laptop to my Xbox 360 recently; it no longer allows any connection to the network. I use an Ethernet cable to connect them and often use it to then watch videos or play music from my laptop to my Xbox with either the default Xbox 'System Video Player' or Windows Media Center (and have been doing so for quite a while), though it's suddenly no longer working.

As far as I can tell so far, the problem arose straight after my laptop updated through Windows Update, though I'm unable to use System Restore. I've tried everything I could think of to fix the problem; diagnosing it, disabling it then enabling it once more, configuring the Ethernet cable - everything, but nothing seems to be working.
When I use the 'Test PC Connection' on my Xbox it fails while trying to connect to the actual network, and when I click 'More Info' I get "IP Address Error" telling me to unplug the router/modem for 30 seconds, but that hasn't worked.
I've seen other threads similar to this before where people tell them to manually set the IP address and such, but I don't know how to do it on my Xbox (or on my laptop). I have no idea what the Subnet Mask or Gateway Address would be, so I'm completely befuddled.

Also, in the Network and Sharing Center, the network for my Xbox comes up as 'Unidentified network', 'Public network' and says 'No Internet Access', but it always says that anyway. When I open up the status of the Local Area Connection (for the Ethernet cable/Xbox 360) it says 'IPv4 connectivity: No Internet Access' but it also says 'IPv6 connectivity: No network access'.
I just can't quite figure out what to do; especially since it worked before.

If anyone can provide some assistance, it'd be greatly appreciated.
(Also, if you require screenshots of things or such, I'll provide 'em. I just aren't sure what I need to provide.)

Edit::
Also, I forgot to mention; my Firewall's been turned off too, so it's not like that's getting in the way of the connection (as far as I'm aware).

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Have you tried moving the ethernet cable coming from the Xbox the router's ethernet port? I would also suggest trying a different ethernet cable if you have not tried this yet.

Thanks for the welcome (and for a reply)!

Yeah, I've tried both of those things; I've also tried connecting it to a different Xbox to see if it was my Xbox at fault, but once again I had no luck.

*Also, with regards to my earlier comment: "the problem arose straight after my laptop updated through Windows Update", after remembering correctly I believe that isn't actually the case. I tried connecting my laptop up to a different Xbox so my Dad could connect to the internet and update his through my WiFi like I usually do with my own and wasn't able to (I had the same problem with that one as I'm having now), but I didn't actually realize it was the same thing (silly me).

Go ahead and try assigning Static IP on your Xbox first, here's how.

Is your computer able to connect to the internet?

Unfortunately I don't think that method will work for me; I have internet, but I don't have an actual router connected to the internet. I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot and connect it to my laptop when I wish to use the internet, but that's it.
Does this mean I won't be able to fix the problem unless I obtain an internet-connected router?

(Thanks for the reply!)

Have you tried to put ICS on your wireless card so it will share the connection with the Ethernet port.

so how do you connect to your phone from your laptop, is it a usb dongle. If so it should still show up in your network connections. The thing is something has to give an IP address to your xbox unless you have set it up for static IP then you have to know the correct settings.

I use WiFi Hotspot on my phone, then connect through WiFi to get internet on my laptop.

Also, after looking around a bit more on my laptop I managed to find the IP Address to both my laptop and phone, along with the Subnet Mask, though it's still not working. I've set it up like this on my Xbox:

IP Settings Manual
IP Address 192.168.43.227 (being the IP Address of my laptop)
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.43.1 (being the IP Address of my phone)

But all it does is the same as before.
From what I can tell I'm obviously doing something wrong or you need to use an actual router connected to the internet and plugged in through an Ethernet cable rather than using a phone WiFi hotspot, but I don't know.

Now we're getting some where. First you can not have 2 devices on the same network with the same IP. So leave your laptop IP alone and change the IP of your Xbox to
IP:192.168.43.231
subnet:255.255.255.0
Gateway:192.168.43.1
DNS:192.168.43.1
192.168.43.227
try that and see if anything happens

I'm currently enrolled in Job Corp, and I've ran into several problems like this.

I'm not sure setting your IP to the LAN Configuration will work. I would try setting it as the WAN IP and see what happens there.

Furthermore, Check to see which updates were recently installed via Windows Updates, and I would be careful about Auto Updating in the future. WU has been known to cause some issues with peoples gimmicked setups. I know I've had plenty of headaches from it.

SF is amazing!
Just tried what you suggested but nothing changed; I still have a problem with the IP Address.

Try public DNS servers. Your laptop won't be a DNS server so that you can remove your laptops IP address from your DNS settings.

Primary: 8.8.8.8

Secondary: 8.8.4.4

__________________________________________

Only breifly read the thread but if you want to have an ethernet cable between your laptop and Xbox only you will need to set up static IP addresses as stated by 2xg. Failure to do so will result in an Unidentified Network.

Also, I'm not sure whether or not your Xbox will allow multiple connections at once.

To ensure that the point to point ethernet connection between the laptop and xbox are on a different subnet please use the following addresses for the ethernet adapter(s):

XBOX:

IP address: 172.16.1.11

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128

NO DEFAULT GATEWAY

LAPTOP:

IP address: 172.16.1.12

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128

NO DEFAULT GATEWAY.

__________________________________

For the connection to the internet using the phone hotspot you should be able to change the DNS servers as listed above and test it. That being said I would keep it on Auto assign since a phone hotspot is not a router and has it's own set of configurations.

Just my view,
Josh

If I'm going to be honest, I have no idea how to make changes/settings for either LAN or WAN as I've never had to before.
With regards to Windows Update, all that appear for the recent update were security updates as far as I can tell. (But yeah, I've noticed WU tends to create problems for some settings I've changed before, too.)

I take it you mean I should set the IP Address when asked on the Xbox to that you mentioned in the part you entitled 'XBOX:'? If so, I'm not sure what to do with the one for the laptop.
If you're able to edit the IP Address on the laptop (and Subnet Mask, etc.) I honestly have no idea how.
I'm not really one for having to set things up for a network or anything of the sort, so I'm completely clueless.
I'll try the DNS settings like you suggested, though.

Thanks for the help (both of you)!

Yes put the address and subnet mask in the Xbox (ONLY WHEN AN ETHERNET CABLE IS CONNECTED TO THE LAPTOP).

As for changing the IP address for the laptop - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15037-dns-addressing-how-change-windows-7-a.html

   Warning
Do not change the DNS servers. Follow the above tutorial up to Step 6. On Step 4 make sure you right click the ethernet adapter and NOT the wireless one when selecting the properties. Once the you have TCP/IP properties, click on the 'Use the Following Address' button and only enter the address mentioned in my previous post.

This should allow communication across that ethernet link between your laptop and Xbox. If you wish to connect to the internet then just connect to the wireless hotspot.

   Note
You may need to re-enter the IP address on your Xbox when you wish to connect to the laptop since an Xbox can only use one connection

Hopefully this helps,
Josh :)

For some reason, it still doesn't work.
I've got it set up like this on my Xbox:

IP Address: 172.16.1.11
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128
Gateway: 192.168.43.1 (It won't let me remove the gateway as even when I erase everything to do it over it reappears, then says that I can't leave it blank.)

For my laptop, I have it set up like this:

(Local Area Connection, Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties)
Use the following IP address:
IP address: 172.16.1.12
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128
Default Gateway: Blank

The DNS server/settings on both my Xbox and laptop have been left alone, so they're blank too.

What do you mean by 'accessing'?
Do you mean how am I connecting them, using them, or..?

And on the Xbox it says 'Enter a gateway address. This address must not be 0.0.0.0, 255.255.255.255, or 127.0.0.1.'

Also, just tried pinging the address you told me and I got:

Okay, leave the default gateway to how it is, it shouldn't cause an issue however it is a console so I can't comment on whether it is required. If so we may have to explore other topology'.

I mean, when trying to access the other device are you accessing it via IP address or are you using a hostname like (LAPTOP-1.. etc)
