IE10 Auto-Display Login Username Help

In the Firefox, when I go to a site that requires my login and password, when I clik the username field and type the first letter a small display appears with the entire username and I clik it then the cliked username automatically is put in the login username field. Then when I hit tab to go to the password box the field I automatically filled with the password (as large dots). I hit enter and bingo!-I'm in. However, I seem to have somehow disabled this feature in IE10 because it used to do it. Or perhaps I am thinking of IE9 and it is no longer available for IE10?

I only upgraded to IE 10 a few days ago and have not had any issues.
.. but each user (I don't store passwords or save history) and each machine is different.

If the next settings are good too, you might try Reset IE settings - there are caveats though - you'll lose ALL customization.

I will hold off on a IE reset, hoping that a less destructive solution is provided.

yeah, for now. I have other browsers that I can rely on and IE has been sort of a let down in comparison. Still, I hang on to a hope that it can be redeemed eventually ...

I suppose a few easy things to try are,
Restore Advanced settings,
Security section/ Reset all zones to default,
Turn Internet explorer off then turn it back on,

method 1 was uninstall / reinstall IE 10

method 2 seems unintrusive enough

OK Bill - I went ahead and did a full IE reset and the 'majority' of the issue is resolved. What means 'majority'? This :

1. Sites that I login to and IE asks if I want it to remember the password - the autocomplete functions for both username & password.

However ...

2. Some sites (this one and a few others) does not ask to remember the password, but it will autocomplete the username. One thing in common among these few sites is that at logout, all display a 'cookies cleared' message. Photobucket, Hotmail.com & Live.com and some others behave in this manner but do not display cache-clearing message at logout.

3. Still, a handful of other websites remain where autocomplete does not function at all.

I hope these symptoms I have described help narrow down the problem.

I wonder if the information was already stored for these sites from previous visits using IE 9 and it started
filling in the fields after your reset IE.

You might be interested in IE Passview: IE PassView - Password Manager Program for Internet Explorer, although this app needs the website in IE history to decrypt the password (I clear history on exit and I don't store PWs - so I can't help test). Nirsoft does give a good description of saved passwords stored in the registry.

You might be able to identify a site that fits the criteria (visited using IE 9, but not yet with IE10) use IE Passviewto see if the password exists and then visit using IE 10 to check the behavior.

Have you restarted your machine since the IE reset? The only other thing I can think of is to clear all cached items from IE. This means that you'd have to answer the "Save PW" prompt and re-enter login information when you visit sites the 1st time.

I recall there being a number of install issues when MS 1st made it available (corequsite MS platform packages??). Were you one of the early adopters?

Anyway, a search for this issue shows that there is an issue with IE 10 in regards to autocomplete. The question is how much time do you want to invest in this? I don't want to clog up your thread, so I'll leave it at the partial resolution you found.

You resolved 80-90% of the issue by Restting IE defaults.

also, I noticed a statement on that Nirsoft site that says that some sites can to disable one's autocomplete feature when logging in. This is news to me, but very interesting.

Anyway, a search for this issue shows that there is an issue with IE 10 in regards to autocomplete. The question is how much time do you want to invest in this?

I think I'm done. Over the years and with each little ridiculous glitch that surfaces (and the 'creative' resolutions offered, someone even suggested creating a new profile - can you believe it?!?), I find my time in this browser decrease, and increase in others. I have already gone past the halfway mark.

I can believe it, I think I offered that as a way to test if the user profile was affecting the autocomplete.

Over time I gain and lose confidence in different browsers. I swore off IE and favored FF, but then FF began exhibiting odd behavior and too frequent security updates. So for now my drug of choice is IE.

I too don't let the minor glitches 'bug' me too much - it's a complicated system and having been on the developing side, it was often difficult to find and fix issues on a comlicated system.

Bill, we sail similar waters and am in total agreement about complexity issues. I have been driving these machines since the late '70's and have seen some of the weirdest fixes and work-arounds. For example, back in the old days when all else failed we discovered re-seating circuit boards a surprising cure. Nowadays, I have solved many a weird and odd behavior with the simple act of power off-power on.
