I know that this has been discussed a lot in the past but things move on..:D

Some members here have very large movie collections stored within internal hard drives and NAS devices. I know that there are many format conversion apps out there but I don't like converting a format unless I have too because of concerns over quality loss - video and audio.

Can we have a view on what formats are used and the quality implications for the following set-ups:

1/ Media Center with no extenders - DVD and HD/BD
2/ Media Center with extenders - DVD and HD/BD

Teaming 2 GB network connection to Wired 1GB switch.
Connected to 37TB (Raid 5) of network storage on a wired 1GB lan.
(Mixture of internal hard drives, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB & 16TB Terastations)
I don't rip Blu-Ray movies, so I can't comment on format for them. However, I rip my DVDs directly to my WHS, and they play back without any issues on my Windows 7 and Vista computers through Media Center. I rip the entire DVD, as my kids love all the extras that come on the DVD, and I keep things in the standard VIDEO_TS format. No issues with gigabit wired or 802.11n wireless.

With 1TB drives so cheap nowadays, I don't even worry about running out of space.

I use bitripper and xvid codec.
They look pretty decent on the screen and just as good through my xbox.

From Dvd. I use handbrake.. rip to MKV.. using h264 and ac3.

Turn that mkv into a m2ts file... Best you can do!

although ogg has gotten to grow on me too...:)
add to that h. 264 (either 3.1 for SD video or 4.1 for HD) and either Flac, ac3, or mp3

avi is 5 years ago...:)


as for blu-ray i also dont have a reader so i only come around with hd demos or online videos...;)

the only thing about my setup is that i have to transcode to avi (or to DVD as i have no bluray...:() anyways to view them on my Zen although i wish it will change with Android and the Zii (im pretty sure that mkv is not a priority for the Zune HD...)

and with the Zii being able to handle 1080p when i have enough (planning to get the EGG dev version...:)) $$$
although both do look nice but with the openness of Linux (yes yes i know this is a Windows/Microsoft forum...:p) it wont be long till the port mkv support for Android...:)

That does seem to be one of the more popular containers these days - everything I see on the newsgroups is either that or DivX / XviD

The container is a popular one, indeed. I am pretty positive (hint) that someone is working on porting it to Android as I type this (no, not me).

My problem is that a lot of my DVD's are BD format and the ISO's are averaging between 30GB and 50GB. I currently have over 22TB's of NAS devices to store around 750 movies. :o

BUT having invested the time and money to date, I don't want to do anything that will reduce the audio or visual quality of the movies. I think I'll be staying with my current approach and just buy shares in Buffalo:rolleyes:.

I use handbrake/AnyDVD to rip my dvds.

I use h264 and Ac3 audio. Before the support of m2ts, I was using avi.

A movie in xvid/ac3 in avi was around 1.8gigs. With h264/ac3 in m2ts, I now would get around 1.3 gigs.

I create a MKV in handbrake. The only setting that is a must, you must set the frame rate to 29.97 (NTSC is me) A bug in the next program screws up the remux if you don't.

mob2vob... very easy and quick.. just remuxes your file from MKV to m2ts.... and now playable in Windows 7 without extra support and able to stream to xbox 360.

Haven't had the pleasure of doing any blu rip rips myself.. just d/l as is.
