I was just wondering if I install Windows 8.1 Preview , would I have the option to keep all personal files , or would I need to back them up?

First, it's always a good idea to create backups as a precaution before making any major changes.

Second, Microsoft's Windows 8.1 Preview FAQ mentions some risks:
Your PC could crash and you could lose important files. You should back up your data* and you shouldn't test the preview on your primary home or business PC. You might also encounter problems like:

  • Software that doesn’t install or work correctly, including antivirus or security programs.
  • Printers, video cards, or other hardware that doesn’t work.
  • Difficulty accessing corporate or home networks.
  • Damage to some of your files.
(*The bold emphasis is mine).

The FAQ also has a table showing what you can keep when you update, depending on your current version of Windows. For Windows 7, it says you will keep "Personal files." (Note, this does not include Windows settings, or apps).

Hello Rawad,

This would be better asked at our sister site www.eightforums.com instead.

Yes, you would have the option to keep all files, settings, and apps from Windows 8, but I would recommend to wait until October 18th when the final RTM Windows 8.1 is available to upgrade to. If you upgrade to the preview now, you will not be able to keep everything when upgrading to the RTM. :)

Alright I will stay Windows 8 for now. Thanks for the suggestion.
