Activation woes doing my head in...

Okay, so a while ago my brother gave me his Acer desktop computer with 7 Ultimate on it. The motherboard had gone toast and I replaced it with another Acer motherboard. It's from a different model, but still has more or less the same specs. Same CPU socket, RAM type, etc.

When I fire it up it constantly reboots during start up (found out he had put "xdark" on it), so instead of trying to save the current installation I just do a clean install using a 7 installation ISO and the product key that came with the computer. Now here is where it gets fuzzy. It won't activate, but it is genuine according to the MS genuine check online. Can anyone shed some light as to what is going on?

The installation is counterfeit - The BIOS is dated May 2009, 3 months befre Windows 7 was released to the public, and so cannot have an OEM_SLP copy of windows 7 legally installed.

You need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media and Key.

Not quite :)

The installation is of Acer Win7 Ultimate (HYRR2) on an Acer machine (<Manufacturer>ACER</Manufacturer><Model>Veriton M460/S460</Model>), but the machine was built before Windows 7 was released (<Date>20090525000000.000000+000</Date>), so cannot have the required licenses (legally) - therefore it cannot support an OEM_SLP Key for Windows 7 - and the SLIC table is actually one for Vista anyhow.

HTH??

Okay, that makes sense, the motherboard is older than 7. Would a BIOS update fix this?

Okay, that makes sense, the motherboard is older than 7. Would a BIOS update fix this?

In theory BIOS updates shouldn't touch the SLIC table - and anyhow there is nothing 'wrong' to fix, as the system is doing exactly what is was designed to do.

In practice a number of OEM's got sloppy and published BIOS updates which had SLIC tables in them. I can't say which ones (partly because I only know a couple, which aren't relevant here, and partly because I don't believe I should).

That, and the fact that OEM licenses get no support from MS (retail licenses get 90 days free support from date of first activation - and must normally be activated before support is given)

The good thing that has come from this is I've thrown in some better hardware bits with no fear of 7 wanting activation ASAP because of any further hardware changes beyond the motherboard I replaced. Yay for Core 2 Quad!
