Burn it using Burn a CD or DVD from an ISO file
or use imgburn.

SFC not working...strange. system restore acts very strange. I gonna investigate the packages txt file

You have tried all the usual startup repair and diagnostics stuff. You have very important stuff on disk? You have backup? You have external disk to make a backup?

And, I tried all the basic startup repair and diagnostic tool options on the Windows System Recovery Options menu. All options failed (e.g., startup repair, restore tool, windows memory diagnostic, etc.). Also, safe mode does not work.

I do have important work documents on the computer that I would like to recover from the computer if possible. I have an external Passport disk drive if needed. Unfortunately, I did not create any back up disks for our computer. If we can't fix the problem, do you think it will be possible to download my files onto the external drive before reinstalling Win 7?

You have only 1 volume ( C ) with important information? You have external disk with lots of free space?

The brand of my external disk drive is "My Passport". (Does this answer your question correctly?)

Yes, all options failed. The memory diagnostics testing was completed, but I could not see the results because my computer would not show the result log after restarting the computer because I can't get to the user login page (per the memory diagnostics instructions). Is there another way to access the results?

You can run memtest86 or the memory test you did before and just look at the screen. No reason to think memory is faulty. I want to know brand of internal disk if you know it.

files can be saved using peppermint linux DVD as described before.

So save important stuff (maybe all) to external disk. And post results of surface scan if disk is faulty. Burn the win7 install ISO as well, we need it later.

External HDD: My Passport uses Western Digital software, which is what I think you were asking before.
Internal HDD: Can I go into BIOS and find the manufacturer or the internal drive somehow?


I might be offline for the next 2 hours (time to walk to the post office and then make dinner. But, I will follow up with you either later this evening or tomorrow morning. Is that okay?

For tomorrow, I will run memtest86 (I assume this will work with Win 7 64 bits), download X17-58997 ISO for Win 7 OS reinstall (if necessary), and try to create a copy/partition of my files onto my WDC external HDD.

No real need to know the brand of internal disk. But you can find it in win7 "device management". Expand branche "disk drives" (don't know exactly how it's called in english).

Report back after:

• You burned the win7 install ISO. Test if it's really bootable. Don't reinstall win7 yet.
• Burned partition wizard ISO and did a surface scan of internal disk. No bad sectors?
• you copied important files or whole partition to an external disk

Hello,

#1: I've burned the Win 7 64-bit install ISO and verified it with imgburn. The ISO copy was successful.

#2 & 3: I'm having trouble getting my old computer to recognize my external HDD (WDC My Passport Essential, USB 3.0, ~700 GB). The computer I am using now (which is a HP Compaq nx 7300 with Win Vista 32 bit) is old (from 2006-7) and is practically a dinosaur and works very slowly. I ONLY use this old computer in case of emergencies (like now, since our newer Asus computer has BSOD).

The old computer sometimes doesn't recognize the external drive and other times takes about 20 minutes of being plugged in to the computer via USB port before it shows up on "my computer" (it shows up in My Devices, but won't allow me to assign a drive letter to it...) Anyway, I'm confident I'll get it working in the next day or two.

I'll send a posting once I complete steps #2 & #3.
