I have a simple ethernet LAN between my den Win 7 PC, call it DEN, and another room with a XP PC, call it ASTRO. I haven't used the XP PC much lately (months), but I cannot logon into it from the den. I recollect though that there have been times when I could.

I try to logon from DEN by using ASTRO in the folders:
...
Network
>ASTRO
>DEN
Control Panel
...

When I do that, I get a dialog like:
========================
Enter Network Password
Enter your password to connect to ASTRO
DEN\den
area to enter password (I no longer know my pwd)
a check box to remember my credentials

Logon failure: unknown name or password.

OK and Cancel buttons.
=========================
I'm stuck.

How do I get this to work?

So you're sitting at the win7 pc and try to access shares on winxp, correct? If so

winxp is called astro.
What winxp users are defined on winxp and have access to that share? Maybe it's easier to delete the share and recreate it. Which users did you give access to that share? Reset their password on winxp if you don't the password anymore.

Yes, I'm trying to access shares on xp. Correct about astro.

I found the shared list, and see no entries shared. Very odd. I see

Computer Mgmt
Shared Folder Path ... Comment
ADMIN$ C:\ Remote admin
Astro$ C:\ Located in room xyz
C:$ C:\ default share
E:$ ...
IPC$ ...
My Docs ...

I probably made shares 5-6 years ago, and was allowed to make folder shares of say:

C:/Photos/Lakes/Ponds.

"Reset their password on winxp if you don't the password anymore." "...don't know..."?

I'm using SP3.

Quoting the "method" above, "xxxxxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Access is denied." I get; msg like that msg when trying to get to win7 from winxp. "Astro not accessible. May not have permission. Network path not found."

Astro is win7 machine? Sorry I misread your previous post.

delete the share on astro and recreate it. What user name(s) do you give access to that share?

I had to edit the Computer Mgmt table above. I have to walk 100' to the winxp, and sometimes cannot recall what I see. Paper and pencil works better. The tabled gets a little jumbled because it takes out multiple spaces, and makes them one space.

I tried removing the C$ shared folder, and got:

"This has been shared for admin purposes. The share permission file security cannot be set."
Shortly after I see a dialog for C$, It shows two greyed out entries. One is for C:\, but I cannot do anything with it.

I do not know how to unshare using the Computer Mgmt dialog. What is net share above?

Note I am the admin.

Response:
Something has gone awry here with this thread.

Astro is a WinXP. How do I delete the share on astro? Where do I find the names you refer to? Did you look at the table I provided below?

I'm confused. Let's recap

Astro has 2 shares you made yourself: Astro$ C:\ Located in room xyz
and My Docs ...

Which one you can't connect to from win7?
Net share did tell you to what folders the shares point to.
NET SHARE Astro$ /delete
That deletes share Astro$
After that you can recreate it.

Good idea.

Where do I enter NET SHARE Astro$ /delete?

Yes, apparently two shares. I have no idea which ones connect from win7. As stated in my first post, I cannot get to first base.

I wrote this:

...
Network

======
Those are folders on Win7. If I click on Astro, then I get the dialog shown in my first post. The dialog does not show me anything on Astro, so I cannot answer your question.

I cannot use NET SHARE Astro$ /delete, since I do not know where to execute it. Under Run? DOS window? I would guess to recreate I would use NET SHARE Astro$??

"Net share did tell you to what folders the shares point to" No, since I haven't executed NET SHARE.

Well, I decided to look at the operation of Computer Mgmt. I think I shied away a little too much thinking things might go awry if I fooled around too much. I realized finally that choices like Stop Sharing really should be Delete Share. Just to make sure I got the picture I went to another WinXP and tried Computer Mgmt. there. I could afford to do it there, and soon became somewhat fluent in how to manipulate sharing. Call this WinXP Meteor.

I went back to Win7 and tried to access Meteor. It's at the end of the of router, Win7, WinXP (then Meteor). From Win7, I had no trouble getting to the shared folders there. No pwd needed. However, Win7 cannot reach WinXP--pwd needed.

Never figured out what $ means though.

It's too bad that this Forum does not allow picture attachment. Whoops, I noticed that An Advanced button that gets me to a section that allows attachment. Maybe I'll use it next time.

Time to give this a rest.

$ means it's an hidden share. You don't see it as a share to select in windows explorer.
On ASTRO in command prompt:
Code:
net share

You now see the shares ASTRO$ and mydoc (you posted in another post). ASTRO$ is pointing to C:\ ? Where is mydoc pointing to? You can see it in the "net share" output. Write down to which diectory the point to.

Now delete the shares
Code:
net share ASTRO$ /delete
net share mydoc /delete

They are really gone? If so recreate them. You do that by right click on the folder and select "share" or something like that.

That document didn't exactly help. It seemed out of date. One dialog in it was quite a mismatch.

Let me change the direction a bit. Is the only networking facility available in win 7 homegroups? That is, 3-4 years ago when I somehow created a network that included other PCs could it possibly be done w/o using homegroups?

Win7 tries to access ASTRO$ share on winxp. Winxp has no homegroup at all!
Did you already delete share ASTRO$ on winxp?
Did you recreate it on winxp?
Is "simple file sharing" enabled on winxp?

Of course XP has no homegroup. It didn't appear until Win7. Deleted and recreated. Zippo. How is simple sharing enabled on XP.

I thought I'd just see if I could share a folder called tmp, and it produced, "Windows has disabled remote access to this computer. Try using Setup Wizard." Setup Wizard didn't help.
