All....
I have a windows 2000 server that controls my windows domain (I know, I know, I'm using old technology). I have 4 XP workstations that access network drives on the windows 2000 server. Now I put my first Win7 Pro workstation on my network, but I didn't join it to the windows domain. I just want the win7 workstation to be able to map a drive from the windows 2000 server.
I've tried everything! I mean, everything!

net use z: \\windows2000svr\share /USER:user@domainname
net use z: \\windows2000svr\share /USER:domainname\user

Neither worked...
I also tried this...

Click start
Type: regedit
Press enter
In the left, expand these folders: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
In the left, click on the folder named: Lsa
In the right, double-click "LmCompatibilityLevel"
Type the number 1 and press enter
Restart your computer

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click System and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double-Click Local Security Policy
In the left pane, click the triangle next to Local Policy
In the left pane, click Security Options
In the right pane near the bottom, double-click "Network security: LAN manager authentication level"
Click the drop-down box, and click "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"
Click OK

NONE OF THIS WORKED!

CAN ANYONE HELP ME!!!

Try using the settings outlined in the link below. The settings listed have been working to allow access into older servers from Windows 7 and 8 machines.

Solved W2K3 Server can access W8 W8 computer cant see W2K server

Using a command prompt and type the following:

net use z: \\servername\sharename /USER:domain\user

And I received the following error:
System Error 5 has occured
Access is denied

I even tried to use the windows gui interface, with no luck!

My Settings:
Local Security Policy
Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients = No minimum
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers = No minimum
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level = Send LM & NTLMv2 session security if negoiated

Is there something that I'm missing, or something else that I need to check?

On the Windows 7 machine, try> Set to Send LM and NTLM responses , this might work better

Also uncheck the 128 bit encryption, there are two separate settings for this, although it looks like you did that part already.

It should look just like the pictures in the link. Be sure and hit the apply buttons etc. :)

The system error 5 could be if the client is not properly authenticated in the Domain although there are quite a few reasons for this error.

Might be worth checking that the system is in sync time/date with the server.

Also be sure and run your command as Admin elevated command prompt etc.

when I type "net use z: \\servername\sharename /USER:domain\user", I am prompted for a password, so it is connecting to the correct server.
I didn't try the server's IP last night.... but I will try it tonight.
I also verified that the server and the laptop both had the same time, and synced to the same NTP service.

If you are getting the password prompt then you may need to add the Windows 7 user to the active directory of the server.

No idea why this isn't working but the lanmanager and encryption settings have worked to allow for access many times so it must be something else blocking access.
