Interactive Services Detection- program not compatible after update.

Yeah so I updated windows the other day and I come home to find this warning, keeps popping up.

I hope I am not about to get the BSOD again.

Anyone know what I need to do to fix this issue?

There are a few possibilities, I'll start with the easiest solution
Try the MS fixi for installs/unistalls: Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled

I understand the issue you describe is related to the spoolsv, but it's possible that an install went south and Windows is "protecting" itslef by stopping the service.

After that, open an elevated command prompt (right click, run as administrator) and type
sfc /scannow
exit

sfc takes a while, please post if there are any errors found

Not sure what you mean by 'install went south'. tried running that .exe but not sure what to do with it, it asks me if the problem is related to an install or an uninstall..

Anyway, in the meantime I tried sfc /scannow and it says no integrity violations..

What about CCleaner?

Install went south - something went wrong with an install or it did not complete.

The MS Fixit is for both a bad install or bad uninstall - try answering Install.

cCleaner won't help in this case.

Having a look at that now, not sure if I should use the x64 or x86 version though?

I'm an on Windows 7 service pack 1 64-bit, and I have a folder named Program Files (x86) so I am guessing that's a clue that I need the x86 version?

I best check before proceeding, might seem like a daft/obvious question but I don't really know what I am doing here so best to be on the safe side.

Yes I just googled and the internet is telling me x86 relates to the old 32-bit programs which my version can still accommodate...

Wow this is taking an unbelievably long time to check for viruses as well! Normally it's like seconds, but 5 minutes and it's still checking...

Heh - you should have my lappy... If/when I do a full scan it takes around 8hrs (1TB drive, about 75% full).

CheckSUR will probably take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more, and will seem to have stalled for most of it - don't rush it! (I think the record is around 3hours for a successful run - but there were a LOT of problems on that machine)

SFC usually takes 10-20 minutes.

No I only scanned that download, whcih was about half a gig. Took over 15 minutes!

Anyway I have apparently installed it, whatever it is. I can't see any shortcuts to it. Do I need to run it or just install it and then run sfc /scannow?

Yeah, well that's the fun of troubleshooting. The error mentions spoolsv - but research says it could be a number of issues.

Noel is directing you on the best practices for initial problem solving and data collection.

Please follow his instructions, I'll bow out and keep an eye on the thread.

I'm following the instructions he posted but I'm not sure what to do after I install that program.

Are you refering to SURT?

When you install it, it will automatically run a scan. It takes a while to scan - so let it run, then post the results.

I see where you scanned it for viruses, but not where you actuallay ran CheckSur. Yuo would know, it takes a long time to scan and attempt to fix issues.

Look in windows\logs for a log file, checksur.log - if it's there and has today's date, it ran
please post if the file exists

Ok I found this. I turned my computer off and went out after it installed, so don't know if it ran the full thing or not, anyway this is what is says in that file you asked me to look for.

OK so does that mean the problem was resolved somehow, or wasn't really an issue in the first place?

Shall I wait a while and then uninstall this program?
