win 7 crash when copying on other hd than C:

i have had this problem with the RC version and now with the Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600.

when trying to copy more than one or one bigger file to a drive that is not C: my system begins to become very slow, the cpu usage explodes and my only options are a reboot via the reset button.

i have one internal drive that is split into two logic partitions. windows is on c:, d: is practically empty. my external hd is connected via usb and has the same problems.
my dvd drive works fine.

i updated all drivers i can think of. the drivers for my motherboard (chipset) are older than the generic windows drivers and only exist for vista 64. i used them nevertheless, but the problem still exsist.

i also disabled every power saving feature i could find, but it didn't help.

i don't know what to do else then switching back to windows xp, if i don't find a solution.

You said logical partitions. You should have at least one primary partition (you can have up to four primary partitions, so I'd make the second partition a primary as well).

Also, I went to the MSI website and found the K9A2 Neo-F - it's the closest thing I could find to the MB you listed in your system specs. Is that what you have? Did you install those Vista x64 drivers in compatibility mode? Have you contacted MSI for support (they do have audio drivers for Win 7, so maybe they are working on drivers for everything else)? Are you running RAID? Did you install all of the drivers on the MSI website?

(german page, but most of it is english anyway)
i used the system and hd sound drivers.

the primary partition is c:.

don't exactly know if d: also is a primary partition, but i guess it is not. whats the best way to change that?
edit : i don't want to use 2 OS, so i don't think that is an option.

You should install all of the drivers that MSI provides. If they don't install, use compatibility mode to install them.

On the USB HDD, does it have power cord or power from the USB ports?
if from the USB ports, do you use a Y cable?
if from the USB Ports, do you use Front or Back USB Ports?

Good to hear. Now we can try to fix why the external drive has issues. This could be a USB issue, or it might be a problem with the drive. Have you scanned the drive for errors? Is it an NTFS drive, FAT drive, etc etc? Have you tried using a different USB port? Have you rebooted since you installed the new drivers?

it is a ntfs drive. it is connected via a port on the back. it has its own power supply. the problem occurs with both removal policies it's now working with the "better performance" policy. it uses the windows driver. the driver date is 21.06.2006. version 6.1.7600.16385. i didn't find a newer driver.

the same problem occurs with my ipod. i tried winamp and mediamonkey.

i didn't try another usb port, but i'll do it now.

If it's happening to other USB devices, then I'd say it's a driver problem. Possible culprits are the USB drivers and chipset drivers.

Same drivers here, same version. Port on the back are grounded better therefore have better power. You might try a new(er) CABLE.
Had one fail, it was the cable, nothing else.
almost all new slim HDD or devices they recommend rear USB ports.

I haven't heard any of that before. On a desktop, front ports are connected via a USB cable directly to the motherboard - I don't see how that ground wire would be any less capable than a connector soldered to the motherboard. On my laptop (can't speak for all of them), all of the ports are soldered down. They all have the same power output as well. Where did you read that?

External enclosures/drives/etc are recommending rear ports? Can you tell me which ones? I'd like to read up on that one, as I'm in the market to purchase a portable 1TB drive for backing up my WHS, and I certainly don't want to be restricted to certain ports.

First, make sure you have the latest BIOS available for your motherboard. Then, you'll have to use the Vista x64 system drivers, since there are no Windows 7 x64 system drivers available. There are no USB driver packages, so this is the best you can do. You might want to contact MSI and tell them what's going on - they might have some beta Windows 7 system drivers they could send you.

I also have the same problem when copying large size files from internal HD to USB flashdisk or USB portable HD.

The copying process started way too fast (>80MB/s which is impossible because my previous Vista maxed at 25MB/s) in the beginning and then halted in the middle. After waiting for a while, a notification "delayed write failed" popped up and windows explorer can't read (but still detected) that particular drive.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 BETA months ago and same thing happened, but without "delayed write failed" notification.

My previous Vista SP1 x64 doesn't have this problem.

Now I am using TeraCopy (thanks Tews!) to copy large file, but I am still looking for another solution.

My specs: Acer M5641, Q6600, 4 GB RAM, nForce 630i
A clean install of Windows 7 Professional x64 (not activated) with newest windows 7 nForce chipset drivers from nvidia.
