Good day all...first off, given everything I've read in the possible related threads, I am a noob. I am running a Toshiba Satellite L505, and last week I used cnet's "download app" updater and well, everything went down hill thereafter. computer freezes, manual restarting being only solution, taskmgr suddenly showed dllhost.exe guzzling memory, UAC permissions changed and well, after some guided tinkering (thanks to threads), got things running with some stability but not fixed.

So I finally managed to run sfc in elevated command prompt and got a huge lot of things that need repairing in jargon I can barely decipher. To note, I use MSessentials and malwarebytes and windows firewall and last week I had no problems. I really need a guru to guide me on fixing this because I am terrified at the thought of having to do a factory reset (didn't come with a physical disk) or a clean reinstall because, I have too much work data(law/medical) to lose and can't risk a technician tinkering around confidential info.

And as for system restore points, lost all point prior to my first crash, because system restore refused to work except in safe mode so it deleted all other earlier points. Umm, help is a bit of an understatement, at least in deciphering the sfc results and what I can do. So, umm "Help!"

All of those symptoms you listed indicate to me a malware infection, so yes :)

Just an FYI for future reference, instead of starting a duplicate thread you can just click the triangle (report post) button and request the thread be moved to the appropriate forum. :)
