Solved At my wits end with windows

Hi All,

Desperately need some advice.

I'm running an Asus laptop with windows 7 home prem 64bit.

About 4 weeks ago windows explorer started crashing every few minutes. I tried everything I could think of but nothing has worked. I reluctantly decided to use my 5 ASUS recovery disks and do a system restore.

And then I get even more issues:
1. Windows update failures:
A) cumulative security update KB2888505
B) security update KB2835361
C) security update KB2538242 installs but then comes up on the next and subsequent checks for updates as
if it's not installed.
D) there's apparently a hotfix for the windows explorer crashes (KB2638018) but this fails install


2. Windows explorer continues to crash as before (despite this being a fresh windows install)


3. Ran sfc/scannow and it shows corrupt files unable to repair.....


What are the thoughts? As it's a fresh install I don't see why I immediately have corrupt unrepairable files.

Is this software or hardware?

Any advice would be great

If it's from recovery discs , it's not a fresh install. Don't bother with the recovery discs. Format the C drive and make a clean install - it's faster and more reliable.

I would try a clean re-install using the latest Win 7 ISO.
This tutorial has everything needed included where to download the latest official ISO.
Take your time, read through it, and see what you think.

2. Windows explorer continues to crash as before (despite this being a fresh windows install)

The initial crash problem may be hardware related. Using the oem repair just compounded the problem. Is the lap top getting hot?

To be fair it's not getting hot.

Well... I've burnt an ISO windows 7 home premium to disk. (Only had recovery disks with laptop) and I've installed using the windows 7 home premium key from my laptop.

It now won't activate and says I'll need to do it on the phone...

The start of a new set of problems me thinks

If you have the COA sticker and entering the key correctly you should be ok.
It mentions in the tutorial it may require a phone activation.

The following is quoted from Carey Frisch, a very well respected and knowledgeable MVP;

Yes, you can use a regular Windows 7 retail DVD and a genuine Windows 7 OEM product key to perform a "clean install" However, when it comes time to perform product activation, you'll need to use the "activate by phone" method.
